One day a week nanny: is this even possible? RSS feed

Anonymous
I would like to work one day a week. The one day could be flexible. But what I would need would be child care for two children for that one day. Probably 10 hours. Is it even possible to find someone good to do this? I know some people are willing to take part-time but since this is such part time, I am worried I won't have any takers. Maybe a retiree looking for a small gig?

Thoughts?

The fact that you are flexible on the day is great. There are lots of jobs that are only 4 days a week, and when I had this schedule I was always on the lookout for hours to fill the fifth day. Your schedule would also be good for a college student with no class on a particular day looking for some spending money. It might take a little longer to find a fit, but I have no doubt that you could find someone.

It's harder to find some one but not impossible. When I was in school I worked 2-3 part time jobs just because my school hours were all over the place. There are people out there that are interested in this! Good luck!

OP, I am an experienced nanny and work a FT schedule over 4 days with my primary family, so I took a one day a week job with another family to top off my hours, just so I'd have a little extra income. I do everything for them that I do for the other family - child's laundry, sanitizing toys and bottles, vacuuming and sweeping the children's areas, making and freezing baby food, etc. - I just do it all over the course of one very busy day. (To be fair, I wouldn't be able to do all of this if there were two children, and I won't be able to do it all once the baby drops her morning nap, but the point is that I am truly their PT nanny, not just a once-a-week sitter.)

So the answer is yes, you could get a great nanny for one day a week! If you have flexibility for the day you need I expect you'll find plenty of other nannies working a PT or FT/4day schedule who'd be very happy to add on your job! It used to be standard for nannies to work 40-50 hours a week but many families are rearranging their schedules to save money and so lots more nannies are getting 25-35hr/wk jobs and hoping to add a little more on top of it. I'm sure you'll be able to find someone.

OP here. Thanks so much for the encouraging responses. I'm so glad there is a realistic possibility to find someone. I was afraid to start looking thinking people would think I was ridiculous. Thanks all.

+1. MB here. I was looking for a one day a week nanny when I was on an extended maternity leave but trying to work from home a bit. I found several candidates like the one above, who worked four days a week for another family and wanted to add a fifth. Good luck!

If the price is right, almost anything is possible.

Same in any profession, but you already know that.

Since it's only one day, you might also look into paying a SAHM to watch them at her house for the day. That might be cheaper.

When I go back to school full time, a one day a week deal would be perfect. So yes, OP, it is possible to find someone for one day a week.
