Nanny to 2 toddlers and I feel like I'm starting to give them the same things for lunch and dinner!! I try not to repeat the same food in the same day. Breakfast is easy because its usually fruit, cereal, eggs, or oatmeal ( is that considered cereal?). Anyways, here are some reaccuring foods. Please feel free to share some recipes, especially for veggies! Those can be tough!
Fruits: usually bananas, oranges, apples, grapes, and pears Pasta (including Mac and cheese and tortellini) Tuna (usually a melt) Veggie burger Cooked chicken (family is worried about serving child deli meats because of certain bacteria?) Soups Cheese Avocado Seriously, I feel like that's it for one of my charges because she is so picky about veggies. She won't eat peas, corn, carrots, or beans now that I think about it. Does anyone have creative ways to "disguise" these? The parents cook maybe once a week where we get a good switch up of food but its really hard to cook for just 1 toddler! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. |
I do a lot of muffin tin meals, a quick google should give you a good compilation. Other than those:
grilled cheese with grated veggies mixed in honey glazed carrots and green beans cauliflower "mac & cheese" zucchini, broccoli or pea fritters quiche with tons of finely chopped veggies sweet potato fries |
Chicken strips
Chicken quesadillas Tacos( ground turkey) Shepherds pie I puree a lot of veggies and mix it into sauces and pour on pasta |
This is also how I hide veggies. I also add the puree to meatballs, or meatloaf muffins |
Hmm my charge eats anything but here are some things off the top of my head:
Turkey and cheese roll ups in spinach or sun dried tomato wraps Bagels with cream cheese English muffins Mixed veggies cooked into those roll up crescent rolls Turkey burgers patty, veggie burger patty, or those black bean burger patties Chicken salad on pita bread Chicken and veggie quesadillas Grilled cheese He LOVES just eating green beans and black olives by themselves. |
How about having breakfast for dinner sometimes? Eggs, baked beans ( or whatever beans you think they will eat) turkey bacon |
Chicken cutlets
Omelettes Banana pancakes Apple and cinnamon Belgium waffles Egg salad Turkey dogs Potato latkes with applesauce Quesadillas Black beans and rice Cheese ravioli with veggies hidden in sauce Stir fry with brown rice Hummus and pita Spinach and feta baked in crescents Sweet potato fries (homemade) Chicken cattiatorie with egg noodles Pumpkin muffins Vegetable soup and cornbread 5 bean Chilli (not spicy) Israeli salad (cut up tomato, pepper, onions, cucumbers with lemon, fresh mint, and a little bit of olive oil). Pierogies English muffin pizzas I can list more if you'd like... |
I nanny for twin girls that will be 2 next week.
I am there for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For breakfast it's usually Eggs, pancakes or Oatmeal with yogurt and some fruit. Some lunches I do are grilled cheese, chicken & cheese quesadilla, annies mac & cheese, ham & cheese roll ups, home made chicken fingers, etc. Dinners are homemade pizza, pasta, veggie meatloaf, etc. (I try to do something that the whole family can eat). I bought the book "Deceptively Delicious" by Jessican Seinfeld. There are some really great ideas in there. |
have you tried cooking the veggies different ways? Think about how different cooked carrots are vs raw. Same with broccoli.
Offering 'dips' like hummus helps too. |
wanted to add: even if you are hiding veggies, it's really important to still put the veggies on the plate for the child to try. Even if it's just one kernel of corn. |
I'm a foodie and charges are 1yr and 8months, they both been on solids since they were 4months.
Besides all the normal everyday things others have mentioned my charges eat Veggie sushi Non spicy Thai food Miso soup Lasagna Quinoa Leek soup Rice, beans (traditional Cuban style) empanadas Tostanoes A variety of vegan dishes Basically the eat anything I put in front of them. I like to cook and try new recipes often. I also enjoy taking them out to eat at resturants so depending on what I'm in the mood for that's what the eat. My girls absolutely love sushi so we go on many sushi "dates". |
Smoothies are a good way yo disguiseveggies, esp spinach which is a power food. I make my own yogurt which has a nice flavor...not sour like most store bought yogurt, so you don't need to add any type of sweetener other than fruit. I usually use frozen strawberry, or mango, or blueberries, plus a banana. You can google ways to disguise veggies and chine up with a lot of good ideas that way too. |
Spinach is very easy to sneak into eggs, meatballs, mac n cheese, etc...
Chickpeas are a big hit w/ my toddlers because they're easy to handle. They also eat small amounts of broccoli, cauliflower, etc.. Sweet potato cubes or fries, mashed potates or squash of all kinds, edamame (great snack on the go), cooked carrots and peppers, beets, etc... I just keep giving them things. Some days they'll refuse something they love the next day - no logic to it. But overall they eat most things fairly well. Just keep trying the mix. |
I nanny for a toddler as well and for some reason, he loves tofu. I cut it up into little cubes and he loves to eat it plain. He also likes to eat canned kidney beans w/the juice drained out of course!
Goat cheese or basil plant w/goat cheese is a fave for us. And quite healthy too! |
Mac and cheese
Strawberries Juice boxes |
