How many paid leave and sick days should you give a full time nanny? 2 week paid vacation and 5 sick days fair? |
Yep, that's a pretty standard package. |
Yes, that's standard. Many families stipulate that one of the vacation weeks is chosen by the employer, so they can overlap their holiday with their nanny's at least for one week (saving a bit of money in the process). |
i give 1 week nanny's choice and 1 of mine for vacation. 3 sick days. federal holidays. |
Our package is not generous with respect to vacation and sick days - we give 10 personal days which can be used as sick leave, vacation, etc. But the flip side is that the nanny gets paid days off here and there when we go out of town, and we do contribute $400 to her health care. Offer what you are comfortable with, and then when you negotiate the final package with your nanny, you can make adjustments according to what she prioritizes (i.e. in our case, a higher health insurance contribution was more important than vacation/sick time). PP here. Should have clarified $400/month. |
I also don't give as many days, but I make the ones I give more flexible. Our nanny gets 12 personal days (all her choice) for vacation and sick leave. We increased her paid holiday days to eight this year up from 4 her first year, and we are on vacation 2-3 weeks each year for which she is paid. I know it's only a difference of 3 days, but three weeks PTO all on her schedule was just more than we could manage. We would have had to go to the "one week her choice/one week our choice" vacation model, which would have been a net loss of paid time off for her. |
I get 10 vacation days of my own choosing, 7 sick days and am paid when they are out of town.
I do not get all federal holidays, though. I think mine is on the high end if normal, but it's what we negotiated. |
$400/month for health care? That's a lot! But good for you. |
I'm a fan of the "paid time off" model as opposed to separating out vacation and sick days. Many people will "get sick" to the full alotment of however many sick days they get. You are better off lumping together all of the paid time off (not just taking away the sick days)-- Your nanny will be more likely to give you advance notice when she won't be at work. |
