Nannies what do you feel is a comfortable living in this area? RSS feed

I found this thread kind of shocking and out of touch, but also sad that this is what people feel is necessary to live comfortably in this area but they pay their nannies as little as possible and call it a living wage.

Around 50K personally. No dependents.

50k+ assuming one income and no kids.

If I wasn't married, it'd be really tough. Our HHI is 130 and we still struggle from time to time.

That's exactly why MB wants a live-in. She could never afford to pay a living wage. Except if it was an immigrant who has lots of relatives and friends to share a room with.

It boggles my mind how there is such a disconnect between "this is what I pay my nanny" and "this is the only money my nanny has to live on".

I make 23k in a city with a cost of living that is probably 75% of DC's. It's really, really hard.

what's your take home on that? 2,800 a month?

Most MBs simply don't consider their child's nanny to be a regular person who should have "equal rights". Those MBs will fight for their rights, but that's all that matters. A nanny should be happy to have a "job", and just shut up.

This completely. I think its easy to disassociate the whole "I'm asking someone to live on this" from "This is what I pay for childcare, and damn its expensive". I get that its expensive, but hiring an employee usually is. That is what you're doing when you hire a nanny. I also get the argument that its not an employer's responsibility to make sure their nanny can live on what they pay. And to some extent I agree with you. Its not necessary to provide a job that allows nanny to drive expensive cars or live in an expensive home, BUT I do believe that an employer is morally responsible, seeing as how they have chosen to hire someone, to provide at least enough to afford safe housing, and basic necessities. You owe at least that to a person giving up their time to care for your child. $23K isn't it.

If you nannies are making anywhere over $10 then be happy. If you wanted to roll in the cash cow then you should probably go to college and get an education and a career that pays very well.

Will you shut the fuck up with that tired shit. Plenty of us went to college, and plenty of us have degrees. That has nothing to do with paying your nanny enough to eat. A person's education level does not determine their worth or their worthiness to live comfortably. By comfortably I mean have food to eat and a roof over their heads.

Anyone? 50K isn't the same to everyone - it depends on what your tax liability. How much is 50K after taxes??

I have to ask because I have no idea just moving to this area, but I used to pay my nanny in southern VA for 3 full time days a week $325 to watch 1 (5) month old - is that fair here?
