What is the going rate? RSS feed

For an 18 year old with her own car to do after school care for two kids, ages 9 and 12. This would include driving them to practices, about 20 miles round trip. What would be the hourly rate, and reimbursement for gas/driving?

I don't know, but as an MB I'd be pretty reticent to have an 18 year old doing this much driving of my kids. Even the most responsible 18 year old is an inexperienced driver. I'd be pretty nervous about it.

Sorry I can't help w/ the hourly rate. My hunch would be that you'd be looking at $13-15/hour with full reimbursement of expenses like mileage and gas.

I agree with the pp on all points - 18 is only two years of real driving and I wouldn't be comfortable with it, but rate is probably $12-15 an hour with mileage reimbursed at the current IRS rate (something like 55 cents per mile but def check online). IRS reimbursement also compensates for gas, along with wear and tear, so nothing extra on top of it.

At 18, I was making $15 an hour for a part-time position like this. I would do a few test drives with the babysitter and make sure her driving skills are good enough to be driving your children around. As long as she is responsible and has a reliable and safe car, I see nothing wrong with her age. There are plenty of 30 year olds that are terrible drivers. Go with your gut. Good luck.
