So I was summoned for grand jury duty in October. I was asked by my nanny family to have it deferred, which I did. It's coming up in May. I was hoping to take my two weeks paid vacation plus my week of sick leave. I got to work this work this morning, was talking to MB about it. I got the impression that I could only use my two weeks of vacation time. MB also told me they won't have both the grandmothers help as much as they assumed. So I am thinking that they will need to find a sitter, which I refer her to one. I guess I have two questions. I should be talking to DB this evening about it. I hate bringing up money with anybody let alone my employers. How do I do this tactfully? Also I need to find extra babysitting jobs to supplement for the possible three weeks without pay. Are there any good sites to find jobs? I have tried care.com without any success. Thanks for any responses. |
Anyone know what the law is? |
It varies by state but in MD, they are not required to pay you for hours not worked, but cannot coerce you to work, or threaten you with your job while you are serving. I think it's up to them what leave they allow you to use, but its kind of petty to not allow you to use your sick time. |
In MD, what if you can't afford to live without your income? If mb can't afford to pay, then what? Isn't there some sort of "economic hardship" release, from serving? |
Op here I live in D.C. You have about 15% chance of getting out of grand jury duty. |
DC has tons of low-income residents. What the heck do they do in this predicament? |
http://www.uscourts.gov/FederalCourts/JuryService/JurorPay.aspx
Grand Jury Federal jurors are paid $40 a day. Jurors can receive up to $50 a day after serving 45 days on a grand jury. (Employees of the federal government are paid their regular salary in lieu of this fee.) Jurors also are reimbursed for reasonable transportation expenses and parking fees. Jurors also receive a subsistence allowance covering their meals and lodging if they are required to stay overnight. Your employer may continue your salary during all or part of your jury service, but federal law does not require an employer to do so. Nonetheless, the Jury Act forbids any employer from firing, intimidating, or coercing any permanent employee because of their federal jury service. You should check whether your company or employer has a policy for employees serving on jury duty. |
Any suggestions?? |
Anybody have any sites I could find extra work??? |
Are you on the books?
Just talk to them and maybe they will pay you?? My employers would no questions asked. Explain to them that you really are in a predicament and ask if you could make up the hours in advance on the weekend..it's not ideal and I think they should pay you. Nanny Poppinz has temp jobs..I have never had luck with care or sitter city Good luck!! |
I have told my nanny to do everything she legally can to get out of serving. If she can't, we'll work something out to keep her income stable, probably using a combination of vacation, sick leave and future sitting time. |
You TOLD her? You as her employer are not allowed to coerce her to get out of serving. |
Nannies need to stand up for themselves. No one else will. They are people to. |
Mb's who really care about the nanny, are also the ones who care about their kids. Thank you! ![]() |
They pay for your time on jury duty, but it is some pitiful amount. I think it was like $15/DAY here in CA a few years ago when my friend had to do jury duty and missed work. That was like his hourly rate, so it was not helpful at all. |
