To those of you who imagine that office workers don't slack on the clock at the office:
The above subject line is quoted from a parent, asking if they should leave a job where they get to surf the internet "all day". It's in the parent forum. I had zero interest in how people responded to her/him. Some of you should take your heads out of the sandbox. |
Maybe you should read the responses to get an idea how common/ uncommon this practice is. |
| Honestly not trying to be snarky, but I don't understand your point. I don't think anyone would deny that there are slackers in every job, but how is the fact that some parent somewhere is a crappy employee relevant to the nanny forum? |
| setting aside how common it is or isn't (i'm taking a short break to surf right now, but i'll clock 10 hours today and surfing accounts for a few minutes of that)...go find any employer who would be happy to find out a worker was spending significant parts of the day surfing when they should be working. Of course MBs don't like it when you surf instead of care for their kids - my boss wouldn't like it if he asked me for something and i decided to go surf for an hour instead of work on it. |
| Seriously. People get slammed in the other forums if they are wasting time while in government jobs. The difference here is there is usually a huge swell of support for people's rights to read, relax, chill out while being paid. It honestly doesn't make the nanny profession look very, um, professional. |
Did you miss the thread asking if the nanny should be fired, because she finished all her work, and then sat down to read, "on the clock"? |
|
I work 10 to 12 hour shifts. When the kids are asleep, and I've finished my other authorized duties (children's laundry, dishes, straighten up toys) I get on the computer and do my assignments for my courses or I read.
My employers are fine with it. |
Well, that's the key. Your boss is fine with it. The other OP was not fine with it. Your job, 10-12 hours with small kids (I'm guessing, they ate asleep before you go) is going to be different from an afterschool shift with middle schoolers. |
There was a disagreement as to whether the nanny had finished all her work. MB felt that she still had other tasks she should be doing and had mentioned them to the nanny previously. |
Right, but the OP in the other thread wanted to FIRE her nanny for not asking to clean out the fridge or reorganize her office? That is bizarre. She completed her tasks, end of story. Now, the OP has every right to talk to her nanny, and maybe ask her not to do any leisurely activities during working hours, but to want to immediate fire her for not doing something she wasn't hired to do? TROLL. |
No, I read that thread, but I'm not sure how this is relevant to that. Are you saying that because one particular parent spends all day at their job surfing the internet that makes it right? Maybe the parent posting that thread is just a crappy employee, and that person's poor behavior and lack of professionalism is not a justification for others (parents or nannies) to spend the day surfing the internet. I'm not saying that nannies (or parents) should never surf the internet or read or whatever while working, just that the fact that someone else is doing something is not a good argument that everyone should get to do it. |
| No one said that. |

People who work in an offic, 99 percent of the time, may or may not have a deadline but can work at their own pace so long as they get the job done.
For example, my sister has an office job. She can go into work when she wants and goes at her own pace but her works always complete. It's nothing like a nanny job where you go in at a set time and you're working with children. You can't turn off the switch and 'surf the net' while they're awake. Office jobs have salaries and the computer work needs (and will) get done. Unlike a nanny who is paid to interact with their charges and have a set time for when they arrive and leave. Please stop comparing nanny jobs to office jobs. They're completely different. |

Some office jobs are salaried. Many are not. Please stop trying to deceive us here. Hope you feel better soon. |
