Help me transition! RSS feed

Nannies (MBs can chime in here, too!) I am a live in nanny for one 20 month old and have been with this family since his birth. Just found out my MB is expecting baby #2! I am excited but so nervous! My last position was 4 kids, so I know I can do it but these past 20 months have just been the two of us and I am scared I won't be able to do it all with my older charge once the baby comes. Is it an easy transition? I just want to be the best I can be for both of them and I want to be more excited than nervous...so please help ease my fears! Tips would be welcomed, too!

It will be different. Never again will it be just you and him. But you will both adjust to to having another little person with you. Depending upon how much time your MB is planning on spending at home when the baby is born it may be the same for a bit, ie you take care of 20month old and MB takes care of the baby.

It is a huge adjustment and its like getting a new job - it will take like 3 months for it all to settle in and feel like it is the new normal. But it will happen eventually - (for some its quicker than for others!). You just have to be patient and excited. Especially as the little boy will pick up on your vibe and if you are worried/ stressed he will be too.

Change is always hard - more so for those of us who don't like change

You'll be great. It'll be a big transition for the MB too so I'm sure she'll appreciate feeling like you're both on the same side while this is happening.

It will change things certainly, but given your tenure with the family I'm sure it will be a wonderful experience. The bigger challenge might perhaps be in having MB home on maternity leave for a while - you'll probably look forward to it being just you with the kids, but in the meantime you and she can manage the transition together and figure out the new approach w/ multiple kids.

It'll be fun! The 20 mth old will suddenly seem so grown up (and will actually be able to be a little bit helpful) and the newborn will seem SOOOO easy and portable (and non-argumentative!!)
