Considering hiring a nanny. How much should I expect to pay per hour if I live in Silver Spring?
Anonymous
Find a nanny who wants your job and ask her. 10-30 per hour range.

Need more specific - $10 - $30/hour could be said of any place in the country. What about this area specifically? What is the current going rate for a full time nanny?
Anonymous
There is no going rate. Like buying a house. Do you want a starter fix-it upper, or high-end?

Stop answering every post with this! It doesn't answer the OPs question. Every nanny has her rates yes, but a ballpark rate is needed to budget for the expense of a nanny and to know whether its for you.

I would expect to pay around $15/hour for an acceptably experienced English speaking nanny.

Agree if you're paying under the table.

If you're paying legally, I'd expect to pay more like $17-18/hr.

Or like getting a lawn mower service. If you want to micro-manage, get a kid who has never (you'd think) mowed a lawn before. You can teach him how to do it your way.

On the other hand, if you want a pro, who knows how to do her job, you pay top dollar. And you don't get to tell her much of anything.

In your fantasy world, you'll find someone who is the perfect balance of every extreme. Sounds a bit silly, no?

Not true. $15/hour paying legally for one child is pretty standard once you get out in the burbs.

13:10 here.

That could very much be true. I wouldn't accept $15, but I take your word for it that it's standard.

There is no standard. If there was, no one would be fighting endlessly about the right answer.

Fine. You can say there is no standard, but there is an average. That's a mathematical fact.

The nannies saying $18 for ONE child in Silver Spring are NOT the norm. Maybe they are great nannies, maybe they aren't. But 15 is probably more typical- maybe even less for Kensington, Silver Spring. And while some great nannies may command these salaries, don't assume that a nanny demanding a very high pay is going to be the best. Trust me, I have had some expensive nannies that have not been top notch. This "You get what you pay for" mentality has not been the experience for myself or my friends. Those nannies have for the most part been entitled and not great. Some of the lower paid nannies have worked harder to earn their raises and been more humble. And I have always hired legally and taken out taxes.

However, for an American born college educated nanny (former teacher for example), then you might be looking at 18+.

People who try to get over on the nanny, often feel slighted, because it usually backfires on them. Nanny simply gets a new job. Done.

I'm 13:10 who said $17-18/hr, and that describes me perfectly.

OP, as the PP has indicated there are a lot of factors that can change the cost of a nanny - and more expensive does not always equal the best (although I would contend that the cheapest DOES equal the worst) care. Only you can decide what qualities are important to you in a nanny, and if you share those we'll be better able to recommend anticipated costs. Otherwise I think you have a sensible range shared here - best of luck!
