Dear Parents,

We are in the process of looking at a nanny share. What's the average wage for a nanny in the area for looking after 2 infants? Also, is this rate before or after taxes? When one discusses rates with nannies, is it negotiated on gross or net income? For example, if it is $15/hr per hour, does that usually include all of the taxes, withholding, etc?

Any guidance from those of you who have had experience with this would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Always gross. You always find the person you want, then you ask her what her price is. Nanny wages are 10-30/hr, depending on your standards.

You always want to set a gross hourly rate. For instance if it's $15/hr. tell her that it's $15/hr. and that taxes will be coming out of that. Never set a net rate because you are telling her that that's what she can expect to make come pay day after taxes have been taken out.

Thanks. This is helpful.

Agree with PPs regarding setting a gross rate. Nanny share rates can range from $16-$20/hour depending on specific job requirements/benefits and the traits you find desirable.

You can get a college aged kid for 10 an hour or an infant care specialist for 30.

You are unlikely to find a college kid for a full time share.....

please stop with this 30/hour nonsense. You are scaring potential employers away from hiring nannies!

And don't talk about your friend's cousin's neighbor's roommate's sister who lives in Timbuktu and makes $30/hr. OP is asking for the cost of a nanny share in South Arlington.

OP, to answer your question: it could vary depending on if you are looking for full time or part time hours, and if there are any other children. In South Arlington, the typical cost of a share runs $17-20 per hour total. This is split between the two families.

North Arlington isn't the same as South Arlington.
You're saying you received 26/hr, for a regular nanny position, when you first started out with the family? Suuuuuuure.......

OP never said PT or FT. Come back when you can read.

13:28 is correct. The typical cost of a nanny share in Arlington is $17-20/hr.

It all depends on what you want. As you can easily see, most of the MBs on this forum are having endless, and often shocking, problems with their bargain nannies. Not every parent has to settle for that nonsense.

I have a friend in N. Arlington in an infant nanny share -- each family pays $11 an hour, giving the Nanny $22 an hour. I'm not sure I buy into the argument that there's a huge difference in the Nanny wages between N. and S. Arlington, but if you buy into this, adjust the rate accordingly.
