I started working at 14 as a summer youth counselor & I did that until I was 20. I’ve been a nanny since the age of 16, a live in since 19 1/2, I’ve been a gymnastics coach on the side for a few years now, as well as a yoga teacher. I teach yoga now along side of begin a nanny & my business is quite successful. I’ve never been a tutor or an academic coach teacher. I continuously had two jobs from the age of fourteen until nineteen. When someone wants to work hard, they can.

You haven't been a nanny since 16. You were in high school.

Are part time nannies not a thing in DC? I maintained two jobs in high school as a junior & a senior. Being a summer youth counselor during the day & being able to go home at night allows for a SECOND JOB. The family I nannied for from 16-19 still provides a reference for me as of today. I was responsible for making their children breakfast, driving them to and from school, taking them to gymnastics & cub scouts & I spent many an overnight at their home providing baths & bedtime stories. I also cared for their dogs & learned how to be a household manager as my position grew to full time when the pandemic hit (I worked for a doctor & her husband was a Sargent major). Nanny agencies are typically quite happy with my high school experience & it landed me my first live in position in Colorado in 2020 at 12$ an hour with a car & my own guest house. Both of those families are the reason I seeked advice from this forum - I’ve never had a bad nanny family. I wanted other opinions. I imagine in person that you aren’t very kind & you clearly lack empathy, as well as an understanding of the depth of the childcare job sphere & the variety of jobs that are available as different families have different needs.

On top of all of this, I’m blessed to own & maintain a mobile yoga studio where I host classes every weekend - when someone wants to work hard they will. I have and always will.

This is supposed to be a resource for people to use when they need help - I don’t know if the wrong people saw my post or what, but you guys need learn how to give advice without condemning someone for their situation. Many of you clearly didn’t read my post. Many of you should find a different hobby if you can’t handle a single book page worth of text. Many of you are obviously so miserable with your own situation that you feel the need to be rude to someone just asking a question about NANNYING on a NANNY FORUM. Next time I’ll take it to Reddit. For those who care, I found a new job & it’s amazing! I’m making above what my previous family (Colorado family) paid me. I have a guest house again & the family has a housekeeper so I don’t have to clean. The mom loves that I want to have a family manual for us to work together on. It’s only been a week, but I am much happier. Thank you.

OP When I read your first post I was in tears for you. Horrible uncaring people who absolutely were taking advantage of you. Now I read this and Happy tears for you. Good nannies deserve great jobs and people who are considerate and care like you do for their children.

You should have left the minute she said that she couldn't remember what they agreed to pay you. Cut your losses and leave immediately. Get your things together, cash your last paycheck, and wave goodbye. People like your employers do not deserve notice

OP, your situation is terrible! They are bad people. Under no circumstances should you accept this. $10/hr is what teenaged babysitters get paid (and am I understanding that you get paid even less than $10/hr???) AND you are buying them gas and food!

Once you tell them you're leaving, I guarantee the guilt trip will start (Oh, we're stressed about the separation! Baby loves you she will be so sad! etc etc). These are not your problems. Please leave. Trusted nannies are highly sought after, you will find a much better position and I hope your will learn how to advocate for yourself.

23:40 here. Ok, how did I manage to miss the update? This is what happens when you get so outraged by the first post that you must respond before reading the rest of the thread.

So glad to hear you got a new job! And with good employers. Good for you OP!
