It sounds like this family wants a nanny, but can in no way AFFORD a nanny. Thank them for their interest and walk away.

This. Sounds like they want to mimic their school hours and think that is reasonable. I would ask much more money. Take it, then find a new job next summer if you are not working now.

OP here. They aren't willing to come up on pay.

If you are out of work, take it as a temporary job and keep looking.

The mom is a teacher and has almost three weeks of vacation that I will be unpaid. I'm required to be available 50 hours a week. The dad may get off early so they want to guarantee me 40 hours a week. I get major holidays paid but unpaid for the other holidays. The summers are also unpaid time off. I tried to negotiate 50 hours a week pay but the dad doesn't want to. They live 5 blocks away. I like them but I think the offer is too unfair. I don't know if I should keep looking?

You must be an idiot if you are even giving cursory thoughtp to such a position. Do you have a neon sign on your forehead that flashes I AM AN IDIOT, USE ME!

If they also want a time commitment for a few years, that certainly will not work considering your grad school plans.

It is unfair of them to set aside fifty hours a week for them, yet only guarantee forty paid. Unfair indeed.

They are thinking of doing daycare in the fall when I would enter grad school. It will be about a 10 month commitment. I would have to find a summer job to bridge the gap between summer and grad school.

So OP, you need a family going to daycare next fall and need nanny thru the summer? That is going to limit your options. Best bet would be to find family with child going into pre-k/k next year so they need full time care only for one more year.

Don't do it. Plenty of jobs out there with normal hours and paid vacation. We just hired a nanny at $18 with holidays and paid time off and if I take vacation she still gets paid. I'd keep looking. If they don't get why asking for 50 hours of availability but only paying 40 guaranteed then there will be other issues.

Op here. I accepted after negotiations but they rescinded the offer after I canceled a date night foe a serious family situation.
