? A day's pay is considerably more than $100.

It can be. Our nanny is P/T so that isn't an issue. I don't like to set expectations of large cash gifts for every occasion. She likes having the time off (yes, she knows ahead to plan) and I have flexibility in my job so I don't burn through leave to give her time off. In fact, usually DD and I plan a homemade gift or mini party (bake her a cake or make a special snack) for the two of them so DD can celebrate nanny's birthday the next day.

It works for us.

A nanny working an 8 hour day making the typical $12/hr doesn't make $100 in a day, plus taxes will also be removed.

Seriously? What nanny in DC makes only $12 an hour and works only 8 hours a day? I make $20 an hour and work 10 hours each day (nannies generally have to cover the commuting time of parents who work 8 hours). I honestly do not know one nanny in this area who makes less than $17.

Agree. I know illegals who get $20.

Don't over think. I would love to receive a card. A few cupcakes would make it even better. May be put some cash in the card for good measure.

OP careful about providing things like cupcakes and other unhealthy foods for nanny. If you value her health and physical activity with your child I would help her watch her weight. We have all heard the horror stories of overweight nannies on this board.

Listen to the PP (aka our s#!+ stirring troll) OP, and definitely skip the cupcakes. Can you glue a candle to a celery stick instead? Oh, and make her run 2 miles while you dangle her card in front of her, then refuse to allow her to open the card if she takes more than 10 minutes to do her on-demand exercising. Gotta keep those nannies on their toes so they stay skinny! After all, what baby or child doesn't love to snuggle up to their nanny's ribs and clavicles???

In all seriousness OP, a card with a heartfelt message, a small GC to a place she has mentioned she likes, and a cupcake or 2 makes a terrific gift.

I'm a nanny and have only been working for my current family for about 9 months. I recently had a birthday and the family gave me a $50 gift card to my favorite coffee place. I wasn"t expecting anything and I really thought it was nice.

I'm used to your thoughtful and informative posts, nanny deb, but I'm not used to your sense of humor.

I like it. Thanks for the laugh!

Would you rather have your child suffocate on a nanny that looks like a beanbag chair with legs? Have you ever heard of SIDS?
