Nanny stole Thomas trains RSS feed

You can ask her if she recalls where they are, but unless you have her on camera stealing them, then you don't 100% know she did it. I can't tell you how many things have gone missing since we had children, and no they were not all stolen.

My guess is they inadvertently landed at the good will having been mistaken for something else, or they're still in the house but in a different spot. Either way, it seems unlikely the nanny stole them. Is there a huge black market for used trains made in China?

OP here. I wish! I wanted to believe it would have been someone else - anyone else - as we really liked her. We had a good relationship and liked each other, and we were very generous to her. I thought she was almost like family. But there may have been a little tiny bit of contempt? Or something to make her take them? Perhaps thinking that it was nothing to us, or that we could "afford" to replace them? Maybe any of these are not accurate, maybe I have been thinking about her reasons too much, in an effort to pinpoint why she would have wanted to do this. I don't know if the fact they are gone, or the fact that she would have been the one to take them is more disconcerting. I try not to think about it too much, as either of them are sad to me. Money is money to some people.

I have not yet decided if I will slowly rebuild the collection or not. It makes me sad that the originals DC played with were either sold on Ebay or given to nanny's relatives. I would have happily shared 1/2 of them, and kept 1/2 to spread out amongst my own DC. I don't think anyone can fault me for wanting DC to have some.

We had a large tub of Thomas trains, mostly Brio with a ton of accessories and enough wood track to cross our living room several times. My son and his friends also spent many happy hours playing with them. I reluctantly parted with them due to storage issues but I thought there wouldn't be another little kid in the house for many years so something had to go. The truth of the matter is they are giving other kids a lot of joy to play with right now. You and your son got your money's worth in enjoyment. I would not rebuild the collection. My little nephew plays with several portable sets of Thomas trains and his parents have specifically asked us to only get those since they want to be able to easy transport and store them. If it turns out that one of your grandchildren is into the trains, you can buy the ones they are specifically asking for.

Oh for heaven's sake. Thomas the Train is mass produced and one of Target's best selling line. You're hardly talking about a collection of heirloom Steiff bears or something.

You can't prove she took them, you don't know when they actually went missing, and they were used. There's no way she (or anyone) is getting "hundreds of dollars" for used Thomas trains.

Check out ebay or Craigslist for a reality check.

Maybe they were taken as a dig to her employer?

This is my favorite post. Even if it is a troll, it's hilarious.

I think you're having a harder time with the thought of them being gone and how hurt you dc might be when they are older. Hold onto the memories and let the object go. Unless nanny is certifiably insane I wouldn't ask her about them... You could stop by her house and look in the window and see if you're trains are set up

This cannot be life! OP, really?? I'm glad you aren't anyone's lawyer, because your reasoning is ridiculous. Why in the world would a grown woman steal some blasted Thomas trains??? Did she also steal his Lego's?

I agree with you, she's just have to ask very polite...

This. They are not valuable. I got an entire set with tracks, a Thomas table, structures and about 20 engines for $100 on Craigs List. I just sold the exact set for $100 on CL. Hardly a collectible.

As a nanny, I have been contacted months later. I've been asked where I packed things, did some things get donated, etc. If things are donated, the nanny knows which receipt it is and can tell the employer. If it's a case that they were packed/moved, it's easy to say where it is. As a nanny that counts on references from the families for whom I have worked, I would much rather have a family contact me and rectify the situation rather than give a bad reference or no reference. But on the other hand, I haven't done anything wrong
