Do you really want a 15 nanny?

FYI, I charge the same hourly rates, regardless of the living accommodations offered. Most nannies are used to that.

Yikes, I would hope most nannies are smarter than that and realize that living accommodations are a benefit and their value should be considered in the whole compensation package, yielding a lower hourly rate than a live out nanny.

Tell us about your benefits as a live-in nanny.

Essentially, you are illegally sublleasing an apartment to your nanny since you do not own the property. If the nanny decided to quit and stay in the apartment without paying rent (squatting), you will still have to pay rent and deal with legal issues to evict her legally.

Also, if you can afford to pay for two apartments, why don't you just buy the property from your landlord? It would be a wiser financial investment then renting both. The Mortagage is probably less than the rent generated. Meaning if the owner was smart, he'd be making a profit by renting both units.

I would not want to live in a basement.

I agree, that would be a MAJOR sacrifice.

Do not bother with the hassle of a live in nanny, especially for the hours you need. As you know, the rates on here are inflated. There are more nannies looking for work than employers. You can find an excellent live out for $15/hr. If you are hell bent on live in wait until your baby is a toddler and get an Au Pair. APs are much easier to get rid of than live in nannies.

I had an excellent line out for a few years at $15/hr. I supplemented her income with spot bonuses from time to time because she was excellent. In 3 years she never once called out.

Good advice.

agree, there is a discount for live-ins versus commuter nannies and it is significant and it is net of market rent.

OP should know better than to post a "rate question" on DCUM. tons of exaggerated, misinformation. Starting with the true rate for an infant (1 infant/child) is $15-17 per hour live-out, two kids is $17-19 per hour.

Who in their right mind would pay $1300 per month for a BASEMENT apartment? I pay less than that for my 2 bedroom apartment, 15 minutes away from my job, and it comes with the wonderful benefit of not living with my boss.

With your plans to severely reduce your LI nanny's rate, because you want her to pay you for a super expensive apartment that she otherwise probably wouldn't rent, and for the privilege of living with her employers, I doubt you will find anyone. You would have to luck into someone who was somehow 1)A decent nanny 2)Willing to be a live in 3)Not very bright, and dumb enough to go into this without the protection of a lease, and 4)Willing to pay you $1300/month, in either reduced wages or rent money, to live with you with absolutely no benefit to her.

Good luck with that!

There is absolutely no way you live in the DC area. Or do you mean your share of renting a 2 bedroom is less than 1300?

I live in Greenbelt. My husband and I pay $1200 for our 2 bedroom. What OP is proposing just makes no sense financially or otherwise from a nanny's perspective.

That's so cute. You think your prices outside the beltway are comparable to those living near a metro?
With metro access, $1300/month is cheap for a basement apt.

Its you who is "cute". I can walk to the metro, it takes me 15 minutes to get to work, AND I don't have to live in my employer's basement. Once again, there is no reason for any nanny with a brain to take OPs "deal." You idiot snobs in DC can't get your heads out of your assess long enough to see that what you're paying to live there is obscene.

No need to name call, PP, simply because rents are what they are in DC. Good for you that you like Greenbelt, but plenty of other people choose to live elsewhere. There is nothing wrong with that.

There are many nannies to choose to live in and OP will be able to find one whose needs matches her.

Your hostility to other people's choices is odd.

Most people take offense when they are being condescended to.
