That is not a generalization. How the hell do you forget to pay your employee, then act as though you are not irresponsible? Any time a nanny makes a mistake its the end of the freaking world and she's a terrible person. Payment for services provided is the whole damn basis of the relationship.

I'm with you on this one PP. I highly doubt many MB's would be so willing to forgive their employers if they didn't receive their paycheck on time, why should nannies have to be understanding? It's pretty simple and if you can't remember to pay someone on time, outsource that job too!
It's a crappy situation to put someone in where they feel obligated to ASK for money that is rightfully theirs, especially after receiving a gift (and yes, it makes nannies feel greedy, which just adds to the crappy factor).
I too am waiting on a paycheck from my employers from over two weeks ago!

Stop making generalizations. If you have to wait for 2 weeks to get your paycheck that is a whole different situation than what OP was talking about. I'm an MB and I have actually had to ASK for money from MY employers when they paid me the wrong amount (a significantly wrong amount). It was just a mistake. MB/DBs are human too and anyone can make mistakes. Just because you have crappy employers doesn't mean everyone does. That's just poor logic.

Do you get paid every week or every other week, OP? Is it possible this was just a no-pay week? The fact that you are going on vacation doesn't make your paycheck due if it wouldn't ordinarily be due until the week you are on vacation. Many employers will pay early in that situation upon request, but absent a request, they may just not have thought of it.

Hi all,

Everything was resolved, it was an oversight. To clear up some questions, my employers are wonderful and generous. I would never be upset over not receiving a bonus, which is why I was wondering how I should address the issue just incase I didn't recieve one. However, they have always given me the same amount bonus every year in a card. Giving that this is an intimate position I can understand employers forgetting to pay once or twice over the course of employment. It is a very different type of job and those who employ you might not have experience in payroll. Needless to say, I'm very understanding and didn't take offense, I just wanted a tactful way to bring the topic up without making them feeling guilty for forgetting. Mistakes happen.

In my contract it states I'm paid before my vacation because I don't recieve direct deposit.

I hired someone to stay with a family member for over a year and I never forgot to pay her every Friday come hell or high water. It is inexcusable and I do not believe for a moment it was an oversight.

Oh, please. I have employed the same nanny for over 10 years. We also do not do direct deposit but give her a check every two weeks. I forgot to pay her once in those ten years and it was a complete oversight. I always tell her that she should tell me immediately if I ever forget again. She forgets to give me things, too. Once she took the keys to our car home for the weekend. It's called human error.

Most employers that people work for have automated payroll departments. MBs and DBs are individuals and do this by hand. It's not "ok" but it's not reasonable to expect them to be automatons either. That said, my last employer's payroll dept was so messed up (a state govt) that we began every group meeting by checking that everyone was getting paid. Often they hadn't been. Not ok, but it does happen.

OP, you should ask, and yes, if it was an oversight hopefully MB and DB will be highly apologetic. It sounds like it doesn't happen often. I am a MB and this happened to us twice in three years because our mortgage company transferred our mortgage payment on the wrong day. After the second time we rearranged our transfers so that this is very unlikely to happen again. Our nanny was paid no more than a few days late, and she isn't railing that we are irresponsible assholes. We also feel bad, and have apologized in person, explained the situation, and how we've tried to fix it so that it wouldn't happen again.

so many posts on this nanny board are just ridiculous. If you MB and DB have been wonderful for three years in every way, assuming that they have suddently turned into raging jerks really doesn't seem like a good approach for anyone. I am sorry so many of you are so cynical.
