Yes she is, because she is desperate. Poor people have to put up with a lot of crap, like below minimum wage jobs, simply to survive. Do try not to judge them for that, clearly you've never been homeless.
I have been in separate situations and I saves and saws and got the hell out. If the nanny doesn't fall into the pity me cycle, then good for her. When she chooses to give up, and makes excuses that's when I won't have pity for her. Also, how do you know she is desperate?! How exactly do you know? A friend of mine took a low paying job because her husband makes good money and she nannies for fun. So this money was like play money to her.

PP, you clearly have not ever been truly desperate. I work with families trapped in the cycle of poverty and none of them are self-pitying but all of them have to tolerate situations you and I wouldn't dream of. I'm glad you were able to move beyond your own limiting circumstances, you say you saved? So if this nanny can't find other work, only this illegally underpaid position, her options are take it and try to save or turn it down and go hungry? But you said she's equally to blame for agreeing to this rate, didn't you? Which is how our discussion began. I think you need to reevaluate your position to make it more consistent.

I do not know this nanny is desperate but I can safely assume she is because people well off enough to work for pleasure tend to understand minimum wage laws (and seek to abide by them).

OP- Honestly, you have to do what you have to do. If you are in the situation that you need and can only afford a nanny for $7/hr then okay, but there is no reason to brag about finding a nanny for that price and then discrediting a nanny who costs more than that.

Honestly miss holier then thou nanny, get a grip and quit playing martyr. I know poverty but I also know people who rise above it. So while everyone is giving the oP a hard one, and she does deserve it. Why so quick to assume the nanny is poor and blah blah blah? She could be like my two friends who take a job for fun, cheap nanny job. I don't feel to bad for her because I was in something like that before and took drastic measures and it showed me that bing up was the issue. Which I hope she doesn't. But don't come and tell me to 're-evaluate', you have not a clue. Do preaching somewhere else.

I think OP's point is hat it doesn't cost paying someone 20 an hour, who is experienced to get the job done. So many entitled nannies seem to think they need to charge that much or parents will regret it, as they won't have experience that the 20 hour nanny can give them. But op I'm assume you're a cheap skate. A rig cheap skate who thinks you're superior because of the income. Well, just wait karma is a bitch. If this nanny is wise she won't fall and stay. She will get back up. Which I hope happens unless she took the job because she felt sorry for your cheap ass or doesn't need the income.

Oh I totally agree with you. I know there are and will always be qualified employees who cost less, this applies in any field. What I am annoyed about is OP encouraging MBs to expect 7/hr for a great nanny. OP apparently has stumbled upon the exception to the rule in this case. I am a career nanny, I still do not make $20/hr and Im VERY happy in my current posistion. I think there are many entitled nannies out there, but there are also many MBs looking to snatch a deal "by any means necessary"

NP here. I shouldn't even feed into the idiocy that is the PP, but I just have to say something. YOU, pp, are the one coming off as 'holier than thou!' You're joking, right? I can barely understand what point you're trying to make due to your extremely poor grammar and immature writing style, but if your argument is that people can "rise above poverty" if they try hard enough" and "save their money," I will have to respectfully disagree with you. Perhaps SOME people can, sure, but I'm pretty sure that if you actually "knew poverty" as you say you did, you wouldn't so smugly and self-righteously assume all people living in poverty have the resources and ability and options to do the same.

Regardles. You call out PP for automatically jumping to the conclusion that OP's nanny is poor and desperate, but if you had your head in the real world and not the egotistical, idealistic land you apparently live in, you would realize that that is what most normal people would assume upon hearing that someone has taken a position that pays less than the federal minimum wage. NOT that they are doing it "for fun" or for "play money" as you like to assume.

Also. Can you tell me what this is supposed to translate to? English, please?

I don't feel to bad for her because I was in something like that before and took drastic measures and it showed me that bing up was the issue. Which I hope she doesn't. But don't come and tell me to 're-evaluate', you have not a clue. Do preaching somewhere else.

Huh?

If you can't afford to pay a nanny a living wage, you cannot afford a nanny. Period.

NP here. I don't condone paying below minimum wage, but clearly OP can afford a nanny, because she just hired one.

No, OP can afford a daycare and this extremely (and unusual) cheap nanny. OP could POSSIBLY afford a nanny $10-12/hr which could be on the lower end of market depending on where she is. She is either really cheap and doesn't want to spend that much, OR she can't afford to spend that much and therefore really can't afford a nanny, she just got lucky this time.

I no several people who have nannies for $8-$9 dollars taking care of multiple children. Just like some parents overpay their nannies, some underpay. There is always someone out there who will accept it and that's why some parents offer it. Heck, I just read a post about a (live-in) nanny taking care of 3 troubled children for $100 dollars per week.

If you can hire a nanny for below min wage then you can afford said nanny.
