Giving Notice

OP here with an update. I gave my notice today and both families were very civil, and will allow me to work out my notice. Through our conversation I learned that they were under the impression that the end date of our contract was binding and that I couldn't quit before then. This misunderstanding could very well have been the root of their generally not trying very hard to be good bosses....They didn't think they had to be!
