Yes! They are and you should!

So sorry for you! You should request an immediate rematch, you don't have to put up with that crap. The point is to share cultures, not to suppress your own and conform. Geeez. Get out of there one way or another.

Wow. OP, please insist that you get a rematch. This is ridiculous!

What exactly do they mean by acting like an American? Adjusting accents takes years, people go to speaking coaches for this, 'm sure they don't expect you to magically lose the Irish accent and acquire a Southern one? If they do, you're better off with someone else.

Host mom here. OP - if this is true, I'd say get into rematch. I'm shocked that your LCC would say to work it out yourself (that's where my disbelief comes from). If your LCC won't help, call your agency's area manager or the agency directly and keep trying. Unacceptable for a host parent to say something like that.

One more example of au pair abuse.

OP_ They told me to work it out myself and do what the parents wish. They just don't want to get involved. They want to speak the way they do (they are from Georgia and have a strong Southern accent. They want me to act, speak and become just like an American because as they said "America is the best country and if you want to continue working here, you need to adjust and act like an American." They told me last night that they didn't want their children acting like me or acting Irish because apparently we are all drunken, uneducated "hicks." I am ready to pack up and go home.

This sounds completely insane, and actually unbelievable that anyone would say this. Please call your agency if this is for real and the LCC isn't helping, it's not typical.
