Some friends are planning a trip and DH and I are thinking of joining them.
They are just thinking of doing a long weekend - we want to expand the trip by a couple more days, but not sure where to go. Any advice? I haven't done any research for this yet, the idea came up out of the blue. |
The first thing you need to know is that it’s ColOmbia not ColUmbia. I’ve been to Colombia many times. It’s awesome. Cartagena is a beautiful and interesting city. It’s HOT though, so make sure you stay in a nice place within the city walls. The city is alive in the mornings and evenings. Afternoons are for chilling indoors. |

| OP here, how about visiting Buenos Aires after Cartegena? Would it be worth it to fly all the way there? |
| CartAgena, ColOmbia. |

Buenos Aires is soooo far from Cartagena, not a good suggestion I think its 9 hours if a direct flight 16 if on a connection.
There are some islands off the coast of Cartagena the Rosario Islands, not to be missed. I'd spend an extra day visiting one. It is HOT in Cartagena. |
Okay, yeah, this is what I'm seeing as well. I'll check out the islands. Thanks for the spell check, folks! Happy 2020! |
Exactly. |
| Wow, OP, if you're still thinking it's Columbia and that you can take a side trip to Buenos Aires then you know absolutely nothing about Latin America. Maybe you should just go to Florida. |
Give her a break. The clothing company spells it Columbia, so it could just be her phone/computer doing an auto correct. OP, I have not been to Cartagena but I was in other parts of Colombia last week. I LOVED Medellin. We took a day tour of the city with Carolina from this company https://www.supertoursmedellin.com/ and she was fabulous! We also did a day trip to Guatape and the big rock out there and enjoyed climbing all the steps to the top. Touristy, but we had fun! |
I was just looking into Medellin. Did you feel safe? Apparently they were taken off the 50 most dangerous cities in the world. I just found out about the possibility of the trip yesterday, the trip would be next month, so yeah, better to crowd-source than doing endless google searches. Been to Europe and Asia a lot, but no, I don't know much of anything about travelling in Latin America. |
PP who was in Medellin last month here Yes, 100% safe. Our hotel was in the "Poblado" area. That area, and "Laurales" are supposed to be the best areas to stay. Our guide told us she discourages people from staying downtown--and when we visited in the daytime, I could see why. I didn't feel unsafe, but it wasn't the best area. I'm not sure what it would be like at night. Specifically, we stayed at the "Sites" hotel. It was a great hotel and every window/balcony in our suite had a gorgeous view. It was about a 15 minute walk to the metro (we used to the metro to get to Parque Norte to see Christmas lights.) |
| We were there just for the day and really liked it. Did a tour of old town, saw a cultural show. We are hoping to go back and actually stay and spend more time there in addition to other areas of Colombia. |
| was there last January and had a great time - be sure to visit one of the islands off the coast maybe stay a night on one. In Cartagena stay in the old part of town and just wander and/or do a walking tour, buy some emeralds, eat some good food. |
You really do sound jealous. |
