| This is mostly a vent but the process is hard to watch! My child is at a Big 3 school, a very solid student with a 3.8 cumulative. Has a 36 on the ACT. Has a lot of genuine intellectual curiosity. Kid is ED'ing to WashU. It's a great school obviously but student body seems more pre-professional and intense than what would be ideal for my kid. We don't love St Louis either. But not my life! |
| Nothing wrong with WashU. Stats should be good enough to have a legitimate shot. What is the issue? |
|
Are you upset because you think your kid is playing the "ED Game" where they would rather attend Wash U than say UMD, but really want to go Northwestern...but realize WashU has a way higher ED acceptance rate than Northwestern...and WashU has a way lower RD acceptance rate?
Or, are you upset because the idea of attending college in St. Louis is not what you envisioned for your kid (because you yourself would not make that choice)? The former is a huge dilemma...the latter is your own issue to get over. |
It's both actually. Kid is settling in a way because they have a very good shot at WashU ED with those stats. And part of the settling is the location. I wish kid would take a chance at a different type of school with a better location. |
| And regardless it is my problem. With an 18 year old, we don't get to decide. It's just hard to watch! |
Is this accurate ? My understanding is that both WUSTL's RD & ED acceptance rates are higher than Northwestern's. |
| I’m with you. My daughter is EDing to Middlebury bc her counselor told her it is basically impossible in RD. That comment caused a notable shift in her thinking - I’m not convinced it is her first choice. I’ve broached it a few times and that’s all I can do. |
| I agree….it feels like 17 is too young to be resigned to settling. |
This past cycle, WashU had nearly a 40% ED1 acceptance rate (26% total ED1 and ED2 acceptance rate) vs. an overall 12% acceptance rate. I don't know how many kids they take in the ED cycle, but it is something likely much lower than the 12% overall. You are correct that Northwestern at 7% is lower...but I believe it is a little more consistent around 7% vs. very high in the ED rounds and very low in the RD rounds. |
Sorry, meant to say don't know how many kids they accept in the RD round at WashU but it is much lower than 12%. |
| I don’t know, I kind of think it’s smart. My DS ED’ed to a school that he really likes and is pretty much a target. I think it’s quite possible he could have aimed “higher” but he doesn’t want to waste the ED shot and it’s a good school. He’s not the type to have too much buyers remorse. Wash U is a really good school. Perfect can be the enemy of the good in this process. |
Smart kid! |
| Why not ED1 to the top choice and ED2 to WashU? |
| I am in the same situation with my DC and I just posted about it as well. My DC wants to ED to Duke. |
| I think OPs kid sounds smart. They have probably seen unhooked kids at their school waste ED chances on ivies and end up somewhere they’d less rather be. WashU is a really good school, pretty campus and they’ll be so happy to be done! |
