Parting gift for daycare?

Anonymous
We had our son in a temporary in home daycare for two months. The woman was extremely nice, it was a great daycare, and our son was very happy. We are thinking of a thank you gift our last day. Is there a customary amount? Like a week’s tuition? I feel like house cleaners a week’s fee is customary at Christmas. Or just like a Christmas gift, whatever we can give that seems enough?

I would maybe just do a note and a gift card to Target or Amazon. You don’t need to do a full weeks pay.

Did you pay her for her services? That should be enough. I can't imagine giving daycare a bonus when leaving. When my kids left daycare the teachers actually got them small gifts (which was nice but not necessary).

You are right. It’s not necessary. But as a daycare worker, I can tell you that the majority of parents do give a small gift of some kind. It ranges anywhere from a greeting card, a generous gift card and a couple have done a weeks tuition but if I’m honest with you it’s been parents who have had multiple kids come through.

I mean yeah paying them is all that’s required but what’s wrong with a kind gesture for a low paid worker who provided good care? OP, I was in a similar situation recently and gave $60/each to the two teachers with thank you cards. I really appreciated how much their temporary care helped my family, especially because I know temporary is more stressful for them.

OP here and this is exactly our situation. We are extremely thankful that she welcomed him in for two months AND that she happened to be fantastic. We would consider staying if she had a permanent opening and the commute was better. As a family we value generosity and gratitude and this is one of those times cash can really help make someone’s day.

The question was how much, not whether to give. I appreciate PP sharing their experience. My husband suggested $50 for the owner and $25 for the two assistants.

I would give $50 to all three if you can afford it. We were at in-homes for 2 years and I always gave equal cash gifts to the owner and assistant.

I am a special Ed teacher not a daycare provider but it always bothers me when someone gives me more than my assistants. I would make the gifts equal.

We did hand written thank you cards with a little cash in it for each provider.

The question was “is there a customers amount” and clearly there isn’t. At my daycare the amount was zero.
