Want to explore the national park. Probably 3-4 nights in April. 2 kids 11 and 8. Anyone done this trip and have an accommodation you love? Courtyard by Marriott, Hampton Inn, and Holiday Inn look fine, but want to make sure I'm not missing anything! I envision a cozy cabin with mountain views, and that would be my preference... but that also comes with the caveat that DH is...uh...picky about accommodations and won't go for anything too rustic (basically the hotels I previously listed would be the baseline). |
Wouldn't April be too cold for rafting? Without rafting, there wouldn't be enough to do. Check out the ghost town, do a hike with views of the bridge, maybe check out the coal mine in Beckley. That can all be done in a day. |
You could try Adventures on the Gorge. I think their cabins are on the newer side so shouldn't be too rustic. Or go to Fayetteville and stay at Hawks Nest Lodge so your DH has a hotel.
I'm from WV and drive through that area frequently, so feel comfortable saying that a hotel in Beckley is not going to feel like a vacation. At all. |
Beckley is equidistant between my ex husband and myself. Done lots of kid exchanges at the Tamarack and some overnights there also. It’s fine. But the Hampton Inn is probably the best bet. |
I am from the area…your best bet is going to be Glade Springs if you like nice accomodations. https://www.gladesprings.com

Pp here…I should also note they have villas as well, so maybe a good compromise on your mountain cabin with view and his hotel standards. We have used these for our of town guests and they were very happy. |
You can rent a house near the greenbrier (or stay at the hotel, but I think the houses with community access are often nicer). It’s about an hour from beckley |
Beckley native here…this option is going to involve too much driving. Glade will save you 45 minutes each way and is just as nice. Most of the sights are in Fayetteville, but the only options I can recommend there are more B&B Victorians, not the most child-friendly. There are a few nice cabins on AirBNB but DCUM hates AirBNB, so husband might too. |
Hmm, ok. TMI, but DH and I witnessed a man drown while rafting in Colorado and it freaked us out enough that we will never raft again. So, no rafting. But our goal as a family is to go to as many national parks as possible. |
That's ok. This doesn't really register as a vacation in my mind. |
This is a great compromise and certainly along the lines of what I'm looking for. Don't think I ever would've found this on my own. Thanks! |
Country Road Cabins are not in Beckley but are convenient to the park and are actually nice - much cleaner/nicer/more comfy than a lot of cabins or AirBnBs I've stayed in. |
These look fabulous! Thank you for sharing! |
Many of the state parks in West Virginia have lodging, including cabins. Pipestem is the only one I've stayed at but it's almost an hour from Beckley, and the state park accommodations might not meet DH's standards. |
