Mother daughter NYC trip- Lion King or Rockette's Christmas Show?

Anonymous
I'm taking my 6yo DD on a long weekend in NYC this holiday season. Should we see The Lion King or the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular?

Any other fun suggestions? It will be my first time there as well!

You have to do Radio City -- it's iconic. And the theater itself is stunning.

That’s a hard decision. I would probably do the Rockettes if it’s at Christmas. Do the Lion King another time.

I tend to agree with this. But I would probably show my kid some video clips and let her decide.

I will be the vote for Lion King— Rockettes is fun for about 5 minutes while Lion King is more likely to hold their interest.

I vividly remember seeing the Rockettes when I was your daughter's age, and many years later, DH and I took our kids to see both Lion King and the Radio City Christmas Show. The Rockettes are terrific (I say this as someone who went on to study ballet all the way through high school and who loves all styles of dance), but the rest of the Radio City show is kind of a snooze. Lion King, though -- that's a visually and musically stunning show with a heartwarming story.

You can see Lion King anywhere but the Rockettes in NYC at Christmas is super special! Also, Skating at Rock center is a must do and if she's into Santa go to Macys. The M&M store is fun for kids of all ages.

Potential spoilers below.

Lion King is so dark and scary after the opening song. The opening is gorgeous, and the parades of “animals” (people in costumes dressed as elephants, etc) down the aisles are very beautiful, but then it gets darker and darker and darker, with multiple death scenes, and darkening lighting. It’s sad and it’s scary. We just saw it in June and I wish we had seen something different. There was also a long “technical difficulties” pause at our show, which was very scary because some parents were asking if there was a shooter because the attendants locked the doors, and then kids were screaming. It started again after 30 minutes of this, and then my daughter vomited in her lap. Just a horrible experience.

I took my then 7 year old DD to both these shows last Christmas.

I would say she enjoyed Rockettes more. I agree the non-Rockettes content is slow. But the whole thing keeps moving.

Lion King is also long some of it will go over a 6 year old's head. I agree some parts of it are a bit dark. My daughter liked it but was a bit restless.

Radio City is decorated at the holidays and will get you into the holiday spirit. My sons enjoyed the Rockettes too.

If you are going at Christmas I vote Rockettes. You can see Lion King anywhere.

Lion King is LOOOOONG. Be sure she wants to sit there for almost two hours before the intermission.

Radio City Christmas Spectacular is awesome (Rockettes, Santa, the toy soldiers, amazing sets, etc.), but also gets VERY Jesus'y at certain points. My Jewish nieces were like "WTF is this?"

So yeah, RCCS will be more festive. But it's also got a lot of religious elements.

Splurge for good seats on the floor. It's worth it. Sorta like how you should splurge for an ocean front room in Miami. When in Rome...
