| Is anyone familiar with LACs that have 3 plus 2 programs or allow you to take engineering/computer sciences class at larger universities nearby? Daughter is looking for smaller school, but also engineering or computer science that is competitive. 4.0 GPA. 1400 SAT |
Haverford has a 4-1 program with Penn that leads to a Bachelors from Haverford and a Masters in Engineering from Penn (which includes taking some Penn courses in undergrad that count for both) Haverford also has a number of 3-2 programs in engineering or computer science with Cal Tech, although that obviously isn't close by. |
| You can participate in a 3-2 or 4-2 program which gives you both a B.A. from Wesleyan and a B.S. in engineering from Columbia, Caltech, or Dartmouth. |
| I had a recruited athlete that majored in Engineering. We decided to rule out 3 +2 programs. It seemed like a waste of money to pay for the 5th year and it made more sense to just major in engineering at the start. |
How does one major in engineering at a LAC? 3+2 exists because the schools don't have engineering departments |
| Consider Smith’s engineering program. 4 years at a SLAC. Many Ivy League grad professors. |
| There are LACs that have an engineering option, such as Smith College and Lehigh. You could also look at Washington Univ in St Louis. It’s a university but on the small side (7k undergrad). There are options but you’ll have to dig a bit. Strongly encourage visiting schools as well. |
| If Smith doesn’t work, consider St Mary’s + Univ of Notre Dame. They are across the street from each other and share many extracurriculars. While I do think it’s silly to pay for 5 years of undergrad, with this program she is essentially in one place for 5 years and can maintain friends and mentors. PS, can she retake the SAT? |

It's a scam

I would avoid the 3+2 programs in favor of a LAC with engineering or computer science depending on her preference.
Students don't want to leave for their senior year so they usually end up opting out and if they don't you have to pay an extra year of tuition. They tend not to be too popular so they aren't the smoothest run programs either. |
Lehigh is more of a small university than a liberal arts college |

Smith's engineering program is really strong--highly recommend!

| Large public university honors colleges offer the best of both worlds--small classes & individual attention with all the opportunities, options, and excitement of a university setting. 1400 SAT, however, is a bit on the low side for many public university honors colleges. |
Not always, and not often for engineering courses. |
Swarthmore has an engineering program, too. |
