But I can't think of any reason why a deeply religious woman like the Queen, who stuck by her own imperfect marriage for decades and dedicated her whole life to her personal ideal of Britain, would have any desire to befriend a woman like Camilla Parker-Bowles.

I can think of one: her son was in love with Camilla. Clearly, you have never had to make compromises on behalf of your adult children.

I don't know these people and feel strongly that the public can never really have any credible information about the private lives of public figures. So who knows what they really think!

But I gotta say I've seen what looks like a lot of fond candid photos of Charles with Kate. She certainly acts like a credit to his institution and I think always assume a supportive public position in every respect. Her clothing choices at ensemble appearances tend to be fairly quiet. And like we all know not to upstage the bride at a wedding, I'm pretty sure it goes without saying that the queen gets to be the fashion focal point. The family and all their staff can't possibly need reminders. So for those reasons, I think any reports that Charles directed Kate to do what she already does all the time, and that he's anything other than grateful toward her for her support without challenge, are not likely to be credible.
