I get that she didn’t want him to do that. What I don’t get is what William did for the next 30+ years? He was clean for a while yet never went back to see his cousin or join back up with the band. In some ways they make it sounds like he was a drug addict for a lot longer than he really was.
In last night's episode William told his cousin that he didn't go back because he was embarrassed about what he (William) had become.
I saw that, but was still confused because it seemed like his drug years didn't last that long, based on when he told Rebecca he was clean and wanted a relationship with his son. So what did he do for those 30yrs?
It's likely William went back to drugs after Rebecca made sure he wasn't part of Randall's life. It can be a lifelong struggle. My brother just passed away from an overdose after 30 years of using. He had clean periods of time, but lived with so much shame.

Why did he mention that he was raised by white people to explain his excitement over having cousins? I did not grow up in the US so did not get this cultural reference.

Cried for the first time at a show in forever. The ending was beautiful, but I do think that they made William into the "magical black man" trope. I also thought the flashback to Memphis was too long but the ending of the episode really got me. I love Randall!

Having met certain cousins of mine for the first time in my life as an adult, I had the same type of reaction as Randall did. That same level of excitement, that same feeling of joy. It really hit home for me because it's such a magical feeling to meet family members you didn't know before. I really connected with that one segment. I think if you haven't experienced it, you may not fully get it, but his response was very real.

The song at the end was just a rendition of another song played throughout the series called Blues Run The Game by Jackson C. Frank. This series made me fall in love with the song.

When I visited the homeland with my parents as a young adult, I met relatives I had never met before or briefly when I was like 3. We were laughing and carrying on within minutes. There was such a joy in reconnecting. They all remember William, this is his son. It rang true for me.
