States should collect the monies and give them to people of color.

I will concede to removing Confederate statues....even though doing so IMHO does nothing to end racism.
But when you start talking about removing names/statues of US Presidents and others such as George Mason....and calling out old series, movies, etc....yes, I disagree. I also disagree about someone being called out/ostracized for something they did or said 20 years ago. If there's evidence that it was repetitive racism sure...but not for a one time slip up/mistake made in the past.
George Washington owned slaves....he was a product of his time. Yes it was wrong, but you don't judge someone on the one mistake they made.
I love watching Gone with the Wind, I love watching old classic movies....love all Audrey Hepburn, John Wayne movies, etc....I also grew up watching The Cosby Show A Different World and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

That will work out well in places like Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi.
Yes, it will allow the healing to begin. California is ready to start this right now!
All this talk of "healing" is really vague but essentially means "payback." Healing is probably the least likely outcome. It would lead to a lot of resentment among recent immigrants and others, and would give Cons an excuse to say "we're done here, we can cancel TANF and all the other programs now."
Let's do things that will meaningfully help this and future generations. Raise the minimum wage to $15/hour, universal healthcare, and subsidies to low-income individuals for education and housing.

So ignorant. Nearly 200k free black men and escaped slaves fought for the Union. Also, the Union was not finding to end slavery - they were fighting to keep the union together. There were slave-owning states within the Union, e.g., MARYLAND.
OMG. You are literally giving history lessons from racist Southern high schools.
Let us take a minute to pray for your teachers, clearly they failed you tremendously. Reparations were not paid because white Americans died to free slaves while fighting in the Union army. Many POC fought for the Union. The war itself was not about ending slavery - it was indeed about preserving the Union. This is why, for example, the Emancipation Proclamation did not apply to Maryland: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/md-politics/the-not-quite-free-state-maryland-dragged-its-feet-on-emancipation-during-civil-war/2013/09/13/a34d35de-fec7-11e2-bd97-676ec24f1f3f_story.html.
My.teachers taught me very well, thank you. Slavery was THE ISSUE that divided the union. Southern schools downplay this fact, I hear it from Southerners all the time.
There is no doubt that Lincoln intended to end slavery and that the South seceded for this reason. However Lincoln envisioned a gradual peaceful process. The war made that impossible. The Emancipation Proclamation exempted Unionist slave states to keep them loyal. This was a political move by Lincoln to help win the war, particularly as it applies to Maryland, because he could not win if Washington DC was surrounded by rebel states.
And of course, once the war was over, the Constitution was amended to end slavery everywhere.
Stop getting your history from newspapers and take a class in history.
And stop being so rude in your own ignorance. You are not helping your cause.
Has there been another country or people that have gone to war with each other to affirm the humanity of a minority?
We still need to finish the job.
Many people still don’t believe that black lives matter.
+100
PP is completely right. No matter how many lives were lost in the Civil War, reparations need to be made to close out that chapter, as well as the following 100 years of life in this country with no rights.
We were promised 40 acres and a mule back then. How much is that now when you add 155 years of inflation?

Plus to those who keep repeating "are you an ally or are you racist"....that is the most ignorant and narrow minded statement. Just because someone disagrees with reparations, disagrees with removing names/statues, doesn't march in protests... does not make them racist!!
