If there are major issues between Maddox and Brad, then Maddox excusing himself from the group visit is a prudent move. They should meet, with a therapist, one-on-one. To ruin the visit for five children who may sincerely miss their dad, to force them to pick sides (brother Maddox or dad), and have all of that play out with no space left for affection among the others...that would have been the mistake.

I hope they can patch things up and get back together.

Because if the parents weren't divorcing, the teenager would be living with both parents and wouldn't have the option to easily avoid his father, even if there had been hurt feelings or anger. The separation and divorce are about the parents being apart and shouldn't be about using that as a reason to allow the kids an excuse not to continue parental relationships.

Not the PP, but I don't think it's a stretch at all. It's what my mother did when she left my dad. My brother was 14 at the time, and he literally ran away at the first visitation. Jumped right out of the car. When we were adults her told me that she'd focused on all the many annoyances and conflict that he had with our dad and said the only solution was to get away from him. Typical teenage stuff and it took another ten years for him to realize our mother was the crazy hurtful parent.

Coming from a divorced home - at age 15 my mother couldn't force me to meet my dad. Maddox does have a say. Maybe Brad did something to him Ina drunken stupor. Maybe he did nothing. But you have to give the term time to overcome whatever he is feeling. If my mom forced me I would have resented her and lashed out. They gave me time and now I have a relationship with my dad.

I think its very Oedipal of Maddox to not want anything to do with his dad, just his mother.
