Ideally she wouldn't have been worried about showing anything and her costume would have been perfectly secure, but I don't blame her for putting that hand down if she wasn't 100 percent sure she would not have a wardrobe malfunction in her crotch!

I am Egyptian and a lot of the women in my family love traditional dancing and I do see it as an art form but it is also super problematic. Just because brown people do something does not mean it is not problematic.

NP here. I think both performers are talented and beautiful. I did notice how much more natural Shakira seemed - which made me think that Shakira was far more beautiful than JLo. Even though looking at each of them on Superbowl night, you might say that JLo was a little more beautiful - with her long and full hair extensions, fillers and plastic surgery, layers of professional stage makeup, and strict work out regimen by her paid personal trainer.

I get it, Shakira is in shape with two young kids, but doesn't seem to need "all that".

I also get it, JLo is 50 and she looks great for 50, but was "all that" necessary to make her point?

Anyway, their job is to look good, almost moreso than sounding good. I liked Shakira's voice before I really knew what she looked like. I don't care much for the "get me all your fans and place them in front of my hair (extensions) so it can look dramatic" Beyonce/JLo school of entertaining, but that is just my opinion. I think overdone is overdone, maybe that's why I appreciate (in this case) Shakira a little more than JLo.

The only thing I noticed that was slightly weird was JLo bending over and showing the audience her (not covered) arse. I thought the rest of the dancing and even some of the pole performance showed some talent, actually. The only part that really put me off was the overdone part. I have been in local theatre, so that was my perspective. I don't get paid for what I do, nor do I pretend to. There was a slight feeling of "okay, we get it", when the arse thing happened. All of the guys at the Superbowl party (about 30 people, about half guys) I attended seemed to enjoy the performance, that's what guys do.

I don't know what is normal anymore with regard to performance and nudity, because each performance seems to up the ante. The Superbowl half time show was taken over by a new production company this year, so expect more performances like this year. I most enjoy the performances where the singing outdoes the rest of it.

I am reminded of Pink, during her Grammy performance, where she was suspended in the air while singing. That to me is incredible, because she did something no one else can do - sing while doing acrobatics above the audience. She was scantily clad, but it was part of the acrobatics, not part of the "let me show you this many angles of where the sun don't shine". Also, she didn't need fans blowing her hair extensions for dramatic impact.

It had potential to be so amazing. Those 2 are insanely good dancers, hard working performers with hit songs. JLo made it about sex and sexiness, which is such a let down. I still thought it was a great show. Shakira was amazing.

I think the biggest question is this: why was the emphasis on dancing instead of music?

The people sitting in the stadium couldn’t actually see the dancers. And neither performer’s catalogue is robust enough in terms of big hits for it to have been a fun performance.

They prioritized sex appeal, which is weird.

And regardless of what anyone says, it’s not pro-woman to hyper-sexualize them. Sexy is one thing; that performance wasn’t merely sexy.
