If that’s the case, I can think of 2 reasons why. 1) they haven’t cast the permanent kid yet; or 2) they are being intentionally mysterious about the kid’s race. Is it possible Kevin and Zoe end up together and that was their kid?

I think the intent was to make viewers immediately assume the kid was Jack. Then when we hear that it's Kevin's kid, we realize he did have children after all. And the boy was white - clearly not his and Zoe's.

Not clear at all that the kid isn’t Zoe’s. Does Vin Diesel,Meghan Markle, Jennifer Beale, Wentworth Miller, Rashida Jones, Mariah Carey and many others ring a bell?

Um, ok. I'm just positive you're right.

Agreed. Not a fan of her character at all.

Huh. I really like Deja - she's gone through so much and has really opened up. I think her wisdom or precociousness is a result of her hardships and what she's seen about fortune and opportunity.

In my opinion, she is maturing way too quickly especially in relation to the other girls who did not have the traumatic upbringing. One day Deja's smashing windshields because she can't cope with her emotions and a couple of months later she's delivering speeches and analyzes racial dynamics in her school, while the (not so much) younger daughters still require extensive babysitting.

I don't disagree, but we did see glimpses of her wisdom and precocity all along. She effectively was her mother's caretaker, the only responsible one for years. The writers for sure "sped up" her healing, but I think Lyric Ross is wonderful in portraying this very bright child mature beyond her years. And I LOL'd at her "Randalling" Randall.

+1
I agree. I actually liked that scene at her foster home, though it was horribly sad listening to her history there. She was right about Randall winning the lottery though - great analogy.

My guess about Nicky is that Kevin renews his efforts to befriend him, and he eventually moves in with him. Kevin, Nicky, Rebecca, and Kate become a tight knit group living near/with one another in CA. Rebecca and Nicky become close due to their shared love of Jack, and Nicky becomes the surrogate father Kevin needed as they support each other in sobriety. It will be interesting to see who Kevin ends up with. I would love it to be Sophie, though that door seemed to be closed for real this season. Very glad Zoe is out--so gorgeous but they had no chemistry.

Relieved Beth and Randall worked it out, but now want to know what happens with Deja and Annie!

After a bland depressing season, thought the season finale was a return to form. Really enjoyed it!

Agree with all of the above! It was a great episode. The writing, the full-circle storylines - I was so into it. And I also wonder where Deja and Annie were, but imagine they're on their way too.

Anonymous wrote:I read a theory that Kate dies, Toby dink’s into depression, and Kevon ends up adopting Jack. And so when Toby says he talked to a jack and they’re on their way, he means Jack and Kevin. Makes some sense.

However, I do wonder if that kid is too young. He could be 19 and this could be 10 years in the future right?

The boy in the house is Kevin's son. Jack hasn't arrived yet and would be older.

The kid refered to as Kevin’s is not named.

Have R&B always lived in Jersey? Completely missed that all along. Thought they were also in PA.

Will we ever find out what happened to Randall’s birthmom?

"I just talked to Jack - they're on their way" from Toby - to me pretty clearly meant Kate and Toby are divorced.
Also people were thanking Toby for coming which to me indicated he was no longer directly attached to the family but came to support them anyhow.

I do wonder who Kevin ended up having the kid with.

I think Kate died and “they” are Jack and someone else. His spouse or sibling, maybe.

I think Rebecca went into catatonic state when Kate died. It has been clarified that she does not have dementia or alzheimers.

This is what the actor who plays Toby said:
“At that point Kate and Toby are no longer married,” Sullivan tells The Post. “Who knows why that could be? Clearly [Toby] is still in communication with Kate and Jack. There are a lot of reasons why marriages don’t continue. The [show’s] writing staff hasn’t told us exactly what that situation will be but I think, either way, there are a lot of lessons to be learned.”

https://nypost.com/2019/04/02/this-is-us-finale-ends-season-with-a-slew-of-new-questions/

I assume Rebecca is just old. I think Rebecca was 30 when the triplets were born in 1980, so she was born in 1950 and is 68 in the current day scenes. The flash forwards must be at least... ?15? years in the future? (Tess grown up, through some grad school and working; Kevin has a 10-12 year old kid and isn't even in a relationship now; Toby and Kate's Jack old enough to have a cell phone). Totally reasonable that she could be on her deathbed at 83 without having been triggered into a "catatonic state." Maybe cancer...

Jack was 6 years older so assuming Miguel was the same age, he probably passed away by that point. Nicky looks pretty good though.

Agree with all of this. I think Rebecca is simply old by this point. My theory is that they're all gathering at Kevin's to say goodbye to Rebecca. Maybe assisted suicide? The pin the tail on the donkey game and sidewalk chalk play some part in all of this. The PPP said it was clarified that she does not have Alzheimer's, but I disagree. That was never brought up at all. She could very well have Alzheimer's, dementia, or a terminal disease. Perhaps she had previously requested euthanasia if it ever got to a certain point, and that's why they're all there - to honor her wishes.

Also, I think the car crash she was in earlier has something to do with all of this. She had to have a CAT scan, and I have a feeling that perhaps there was some residual damage to her brain which perhaps didn't manifest itself until she was older... just a theory, but there did seem to be a point to that scene of the younger Rebecca in the hospital.

Me, too, but is anyone worried about future Kate?

Yes. There was a lot to unpack in those final moments.

Nicky is alive.
Beth and Randall are together.
Toby was nervous about being there.
No Kate. No Miguel.

They referred to Kevin as Jack’s father right? I was multitasking so not sure I caught that correctly.

I swear it sounded like Kevin's kid was named Jack. I'm definitely going to need to watch that last part again tomorrow!

I was like, did Kate and Toby's kid die and that's why they split up and then Kevin named his later-born son Jack, too?!

No, Randall addressed Kevin's son as, "Hey, bud." No name was given.

I read the producers/writers said this flash forward is about a decade in the future. If that's the case, they way overdid it on aging Randall. No way from 38-39 to 48-49 he'd look that old.

This article makes a good case for 15 years: https://www.popsugar.com/entertainment/When-Does-Flash-Forward-Take-Place-Us-45988911

That would put the big three early/mid-50's and Rebecca early/mid-80s.

Kids who bounce around from one FC placement to another either end up stunted in their development OR much more mature than their chronological age. We also forget that Deja —although she grew up poor and being a girl of color— is actually identified as gifted. This seemed very Deja-like to me. Randall himself showed similar EQ at that age

+1 I agree. I definitely think the Deja storyline is meant to mimic Randall's, and that to me makes sense why Deja would want to do the same gesture.

Yes! As Randall, I would have been really annoyed, even if it was so "like me." She doesn't get to do that.

I loved how Beth was talking to a real estate agent and it was about her dance studio--very cool and a good wrap up.

I was surprised to see Nicky, but a good surprise.

I thought Kevin's son looked white which may eliminate Zoe as the mother--and I hope it does because (1) I never saw chemistry with them and (2) she doesn't want kids and that is a legitimate choice. But it was a little weird how we barely saw him.

I'm sad about Toby and Kate breaking up...I thought they were good together. Remember an old episode many years in the future where he is in bed depressed and she is there? I wonder if they are still together at that time. I assumed so, but maybe not.

Overall, I liked this episode a lot!

Nicky is probably the same age as Rebecca right if, as a pp mentioned that Jack was about 6 years older than Rebecca? In that last scene as an elderly woman she looked like she was about 20 years older than him.

Eh, I thought he looked plenty old just a lot less sick.
