I'm not sure it's an entirely relevant question. In most modern, 21st-century militaries, generals are stationed nowhere near the theater of combat. The loss of so many Russian generals in Ukraine is a reflection of just how outdated their military doctrines actually are.

In the case of grozny...what was the ulterior motive? Does that region also have resources like natural gas that are now controlled by Putin?

How many generals would you have in an Army this size? I think it’s 200,000 total armed forces?

It is an impossible question. Militaries around the world can name anyone a general.
They can have 2 people report to them.

In the US a 2 star has 20,000 or so. But our flag officers now have at least one masters, many who lead major commands have phd’s.

I worked at a command where only ADM or USAF general had to have 4 stars and phd.

In combat situations a 1-2 star General would command 15000ish or less.

So --- A force this size int he US would have a four star in command in theater. Possibly another four star in forward command but likely not. Stormin Norman was the only 4 star in the First Gulf War. Each corp woul;d have a three star, a two star deputy, and 3 1-2 stars in key slots. Each would then have perhaps 3 divisions with three 1-2 starts each -- so each corp could have 14 general officers. Probably 3 corps. 36 general officers.
