Sorry I’m late to this part of the discussion but what’s the consensus on her point — comparing the skates of the gold and silver winners?


The point system obviously encourages doing the toughest tricks possible to rack up those points

But there IS still an artistic component, which her teammates beat her on.

I mean, the crazy amount of quads strategy could have worked. But, much like Surya Bonaly back in the day, skating isn't just jumps alone and she needs to at least TRY to throw in a LITTLE artistic expression

No she didn't deserve gold. She only landed 2 quads well (the others had deductions for rotations not going all the way around) and her artistry was crap. Scherbakova was amazing. I was moved to tears watching her skate. She had the artistry and the jumps- also landed 2 quads, but she only attempted 2. She was a joy to watch.

Can any of the US women do a quad or is this just a Russian women thing? I mean they are so physically demanding--to do 5 in one skate and most of them in the 2nd half, that is just insane. I do think whoever governs international figure skating scoring should revaluate the bonus awarded for doing a quad in the 2nd half. It's just grueling--why not just go back to the old version of judging on technical and artistic merit and if you can do a quad great--if not maybe you do 4 triples and that equals doing 2 quads. this obsession with quads is crazy

Well tbh Russia has never exceled in costuming. It is always on the side of garish even for figure skating. That's why G&G black and white monastic outfits were so striking in 1994.


THere's also Nathan Chen's approach, which is, "I'm so good I can win this in athleisure."

I prefer that to Hanyu's costumes. Or the costumes Vera Wang put on Lysacek 12 years ago.


The men's costumes are interesting because they all wear the same black pants or so it seems, with different tops. Kind of like going to a party in 2000 and all the girls were in tight black bootcut pants with different "going out tops."

Just saw the ceremony where they were being presented with their stuffed animals. Trusova held hers with one hand flipping an obvious, pronounced bird.

What an absolute brat.


I assume she is abused by the state. The skaters have little agency over their own lives. Do you know how Russia works??
