Newly released data sheds light on the $38.5 billion in federal coronavirus assistance New York City residents received to keep small businesses afloat and keep workers on payroll.

So ignorant. Nearly 200k free black men and escaped slaves fought for the Union. Also, the Union was not finding to end slavery - they were fighting to keep the union together. There were slave-owning states within the Union, e.g., MARYLAND.

OMG. You are literally giving history lessons from racist Southern high schools.

Let us take a minute to pray for your teachers, clearly they failed you tremendously. Reparations were not paid because white Americans died to free slaves while fighting in the Union army. Many POC fought for the Union. The war itself was not about ending slavery - it was indeed about preserving the Union. This is why, for example, the Emancipation Proclamation did not apply to Maryland: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/md-politics/the-not-quite-free-state-maryland-dragged-its-feet-on-emancipation-during-civil-war/2013/09/13/a34d35de-fec7-11e2-bd97-676ec24f1f3f_story.html.

And this is why the country is f-ed. Too many selfish pricks.

You mean the 50% of the people that pay the taxes and subsidize the other 50% are selfish for not wanting to pay more, instead of paying off their own student loans and daycare?

So you went to college and have a job? Good for you.

Selfish pricks don't understand their privilege.

So can you, if you put in the work. You don't even have to pay for it, I'm doing it for you. Pardon me if I can't afford to give you a blank check you can blow at your whim.

The points is that not everyone can. It's not just about "putting in the work". Segregation and systemic racism prevent equal opportunity.

And, as I've said many times, I don't think a blank check is the answer.

This is a crap answer. Anyone who wants to absolutely can.
Segregation? Systemic racism? BS.

You are not giving your fellow black citizens any credit for their perseverance or their drive to succeed, not to mention the skills and ability they have.

You don't believe segregation is an issue?

You don't believe in systemic racism?

You think all kids in the US have the same opportunities?

Yes to all of the above. Stop thinking like a victim and start taking advantage of America’s amazing opportunities.

Asian immigrants frequently come to this country with nothing, but the kids go to college because education is a priority.

Why should they pay?

No one has he in an answer it this yet...

It's been asked and answered multiple times.

For those who are unwilling to read back into this topic, I will post another reminder:

Immigrants who came to the USA two years, or twenty years, ago benefited from American social structures that have baked in racism. These social structures were put in place to keep us from succeeding.

If you are an immigrant of any background that came here and benefited from these racist societal structures, then you need to pay back some of the debt to black society that has been accruing for over 400 years. It is not personal, it is factual. This debt is not exclusively owed to us by the descendants of slave owners.

Me, me, me. Give me money. Me, me, me. Hey, if I was born short or ugly can I get money too? You want to talk about true, universal discrimination? Those two characteristics being treated poorly span all races, religions and ethnicities. Short for men and ugly for women. Look, it is horrible that there was slavery in the Americas (and just about everywhere else in the world) but history does not entitle the present. The feds should address their systemic racist housing policies put in place by FDR and FHA back in the 30s and 40s by offering advantageous jobs and education programs to AAs. Other than that, you’re on your own like the rest of us.

There are many Black immigrants, you know - have they also benefited from the racist structures? Many didn't even speak the language when they came here FFS, and are now prosperous.
You are not backing your opinions with any facts, reparations troll.

Affirmative action and diversity acceptances in colleges, and diversity job hires, all create opportunity. I don't see the need for reparations in other forms. A more effective approach for creating opportunities is to create jobs in inner cities to create more paths out of poverty. Also bring back vocational training in high schools and improve access to a college degree or vocational training post high school.

Look closer. I replied to this a couple of posts ago. Was told that folks need to pay because we chose to come here.

Poster overlooks the fact that Liberia was offered as a home for displaced slaves. Black people who are living in the US and are descendants of slaves are descendants of folks who chose to stay in the US rather than go home.

They why act like they have the monopoly on oppression? It’s not like they’re the only group of people who’ve suffered. And why should I have to pay for that? I not my relatives had nothing to do with it.
