This is correct! The government is shut down because the Republicans are too incompetent to be able to use their majorities to pass the legislation needed to keep it open.

Speaker Johnson is keeping the house in recess this week. He doesn’t want to swear in the new Dem member who will be the last signer on petition to force a vote on release of Epstein files. And he wants to keep pressure on senate Dems to vote for Republican CR.

So if the government opens this week, it will be because the Senate passes the current bill. Can they change the date without it going back to the House? I had heard the Dems would maybe vote for the CR if it only went through Oct 31.

The fednews subreddit is good about posting all of the most recent stories about the shutdown. Nobody really knows anything right now.
