2026/2027 Age Grouping Rationale
• Transitioning to an 8/1-7/31 age grouping is a return to the former grouping prior to 2017. Calendar birth year was mandated by US Soccer when most youth soccer was previously using school age.
The mandate has been removed, allowing US Club Soccer member organizations the ability to group players as they see fit.
The majority of youth soccer is non-competitive/recreational. The benefits of youth sport participation are numerous, but USYS/US Club team members feel that the social elements are some of the most important.
• While using the calendar birth year age grouping we heard frequently from families asking for their children to play with their classmates.
Using the school year grouping creates the fewest trapped players.
US feels that school year grouping promotes stronger team chemistry and retention by allowing children to play with their schoolmates and closest friends.
Grouping by school year often places players in a more consistent emotional and physical developmental environment.
School age grouping will help college recruitment as it allows for players of the same graduating class participating together in high-level tournament cups and college showcase matches.

Don’t let the August hater read this.
So there was fire. US Club going graduation year on tournament cups and college showcase matches.

Not necessarily as this could just mean by aligning most kids with their grade it makes the process easier for college recruiting. Nothing more or less.
Aligning kids with their grade is grad year.

They're referring to SY in general because Aug birthdays can play up. End result is all players on the field for games are the same grade.

Has nothing to do with GY Showcases or GY anything.
They are referring to the same graduating class participating together in high-level tournament cups and college showcase matches. Forcing a couple percent of kids to play up from one month doesn't move the needle. Aug kids probably represent about 10 percent of kids misaligned.

Bingo 100% correct.

Nobody is hinting about GY showcases. That is all in age guys head and a rumor that hes trying to start.

I think Jeff should nuke the guy thats trying to sneak older players into SY. Get rid of him and everything will be normal.

Grade guy might think August birthdays should play on their grade team. But he's following all league rules.
Clubs don't usually play kids up for safety and organization reasons. Only for superstars or if the club is tiny and groups 2 years. Doesn't matter what anyone hear thinks or wants.

There is no "only superstars play up" clause in league rules.
Didn't go your way, man. Clubs around DMV keeping kids in age groups except best and when trying to smooth across age groups in the first year of SY.

Seems like the only one not getting their way is you and your GY showcase nonsense. You're going need to think of something else to keep USYS afloat.
I wasn't the one for force ups, following grades and letting parents pick age groups and in the DMV, they didn't happen.

What they're saying is that under BY 5 months of players were being forced to play on a team with grade older players.

Now with SY only Aug birthdays will need to potentially play up so everyone on the team is the same grade in school.

Right! This dude could convince himself a red car is blue. It definitely sounds like possible grad year showcases but I’ll wait to see something official.

This is for next fall when SY starts.

11v11 = U18/U19 = ≤ 8/1/2007-July 31 ≈ Senior
11v11 = U17 = ≤ 8/1/2009-July 31 ≈ Senior
11v11 = U16 = ≤ 8/1/2010-July 31 ≈ Junior
11v11 = U15 = ≤ 8/1/2011-July 31 ≈ Sophomore
11v11 = U14 = ≤ 8/1/2012-July 31 ≈ Freshman
11v11 = U13 = ≤ 8/1/2013-July 31 ≈ 8th grade
9v9/11v11 = U12 = ≤ 8/1/2014-July 31 ≈ 7th grade
9v9 = U11 = ≤ 8/1/2015-July 31 ≈ 6th grade
9v9 = U10 = ≤ 8/1/2016-July 31 ≈ 5th grade
7v7 = U9 = ≤ 8/1/2017-July 31 ≈ 4th grade
7v7 = U8 = ≤ 8/1/2018-July 31 ≈ 3rd grade
4v4 = U7 = ≤ 8/1/2019-July 31 ≈ 2nd grade
4v4 = U6 = ≤ 8/1/2020-July 31 ≈ 1st grade

Using U14 as an example what this is saying is...

1. They play 11v11
2. Players turn 14 after Aug 1
3. Players are younger than or equal to 8/1/2012
4. Players are most likely be Freshman or younger

wrong Freshman will not most likely be younger than 8/1/2012 in fact very few will.

Did you notice that he added "Freshman or younger"? Hes starting to figure it out. Unfortunately still hasn't figured the math part out.

Still wrong though. A kid might have skipped 2 grades in school but wants to play on a lower level in club.
