Joan had dates with all three men: Guy, Chock, and Pascal. Pascal’s date was the last one shown.

I noticed that when she told her kids about Guy she said he was an ER doc. When she described Chock, she made no mention if his job. That tells me she is attracted to the idea of becoming a doctor’s wife (maybe understandable, maybe materialistic?)

Joan was never going to pick a black guy.

At least not one who is impecunious. I don't think he's as well off as most of the others, and that's what he was alluding to by "getting close but never getting there", things not working out for him etc. The other guys seemed to know he felt insecure and needed a boost.
