Yes. I did. You should try it too. There are many lovely beaches a lot less crowded than OBX or Delaware.

We went two weeks ago to Florida so the kids could see the grandparents. Wife and I spent 5 days at a great resort while the kids had a blast with my parents.

It was great to be away from the scared, anxiety-ridden people in the DC area.

Back to school tomorrow.

We travelled to see family this summer. DS has Grandparents who are declining and we were not putting off seeing them any longer. All of the adults were vaccinated and we followed the proper protocols. No dining indoors in restaurants and mostly outdoor dining even at family homes. No one wanted to get sick or get anyone else sick. But all of the trips required plane flights, it was what it was. All of these were trips that were cancelled in 2020 because of COVID.

And we made great memories with cousins, Grandparents, and each other. Was there a risk? Yup but we did our best to mitigate those risks. We were back 10 days before school started, not really planned that way but how it worked out, so we had time to make sure DS was ok before heading back to school.

We also carried bear spray on our hikes in the National Parks because there were lots of active bears. Risk mitigation in all areas of our lives!

Most people who booked end of summer travel booked it back when Covid numbers looked great. No one knew the antivaxers were going to screw us all. I don’t judge the travelers. I’m thankfully I traveled in June, but that was just luck.

+1, and also we traveled this past week because that's when the younger kids' preschool was closed. I have limited vacation time. I'm not going to take a week of in June and then need to take another week in August because the school is closed. We take vacation the week the school is closed, and that was last week. And we booked it back in May, the day after getting our first covid shots.

But absolutely risk picking something up and potentially needing to quarantine two weeks upon returning. Mkay.

Mkay unless I am ill, I can work from home during quarantine. Anyway, we didn't fly; we drove 3 hours. As others have said we've been cooped up for a year and a half. That's a long time for most people. It's a long part of my small kids' life. This could go on for another 3-4 years and what, then I'll have a 10 year old and 7 year olds who have never seen the beach, never been to relatives' houses, never done anything except attend school in a mask? No thanks. My now 7 year old has a friend whose parents did just that. We saw them for the first time a few days ago, outside at a park. The father said it was the first time they'd let the kids leave their yard since covid started. That is criminal in my opinion. And the friend didn't remember DS (who remembered him well as they were in school together for 4.5 years) and didn't speak to anyone when spoken to. It was so sad.

We’re hosting a get together over the Labor Day break. No one is local, so most of the family are driving, and a couple is flying in. As for why now, we planned this back in May, to coincide with a long weekend, and giving everyone adequate time to plan. My dad passed away in March, mom is visiting us now (she lives outside the country), and the idea is for us to get together to celebrate his life, and for the family to visit with mom as well. Earlier/later timelines wouldn’t have worked.

Everyone is vaccinated, except my 11 year old.
