My nephew who has an eye on Notre Dame has his eyes on the University of Arkansas. Why? A smaller state school with some interesting alumni.

Most schools publish their “average” merit award — if they do merit at all — but there are so many variables that go into an individual award, it’s virtually impossible to predict. Are your kid’s stats way above their average admit? Then the chances are better.

Just to reiterate — merit aid has nothing to do with the ability to back out of ED. The unavailability of need based aid is the only thing that gives you an out.

Not for merit aid but for financial aid, the school websites usually have a calculator. That calculation is relevant to ED as alluded to by the PP

Oh please. UMich and Wake Forest are both top 30 schools and have long been fan favorites of the uber wealthy. Alabama is a state flagship. Get back to me when you find those kids at Southern Connecticut State or Salisbury or University of Minnesota-Duluth. Until then…

And LOL at the bolded. I don’t believe it was the unwashed middle class who literally committed felonies to get their kids into “elite” schools, was it now?

If you are really that well-off then your kids probably aren't ever going to get C's. The concept of the "gentleman's C" grade is in the distant past. All a wealthy parent has to do is get tutors to have the tutor do the work for their child, help their child, or pressure the private school into giving B's . Or they are having their child assessed and getting accommodations if they start getting C's. So maybe the wealthy parent can't increase the SAT score if their child really is average, but they can absolutely influence grades.

+1. A “Gentleman’s C” refers to college. Woodrow Wilson tried to raise academic standards from a Gentleman’s C at Princeton during its fledgling days.

But the site estimates are usually shockingly low (to most), and the package can include loans. It’s also does not allow one to shop for merit aid.

SMU seems to get a lot of dumb rich girls from NY-CT-NJ-DMV. But apparently their Greek scene is super cutthroat and gals literally transfer out of the college if they don't get a bid into a top house. Sounds socially intense.
