I'm more open than many to unusual/nature names, but Tempest just has a lot of negatives going for it -- naming your kid for a violent storm seems off. There are names of types of wind that are less destructive, if you like that aspect of it.

When was the last time you heard the word tempest used in everyday conversation describing a weather event?

Maybe this is a climate change thing. It used to be that nature names evoked pretty, calming things - Meadow, Willow, Brook. Now it will be Tempest and Cyclone and Wildfyre.

And people will assume her name is either the city or short for Temperance. I personally would be embarrassed at either.

Most kids do not know what temperance even is, so there's no reason to be concerned that's the name. Maybe people are named after cities. Embarrassed is an big over reaction.

I really love it. Ignore the haters, DCUM is only into very traditional names.

It's a fine name. As you've seen, be prepared to defend if opinions matter to you. It may also lend itself to name calling, but mean kids will find a reason to pick on anyone if they're so inclined, especially with parents like some of these.

If you and your partner like it, go with it.

I like it. I think it sounds beautiful and evokes poetic images of nature and literature.

Everyone has their likes and dislikes, but I honestly think the majority of negative responses are over the top, and trollish, just trying to sound cool, mean girl like behavior, which is fitting since a reason for not using the name was " the other arents on the playground will talk". Middle school mentality.

I also think it's a touch of groupthink and a lack of familiarity. I've looked at several name threads and have seen people freak out about a name but then a year or so later it's one of the most suggested names.

Anyway. I still like the name and will likely still use it.

Do you know what the word tempest means? And if so, why do you want to associate your child with that?

Op has said more than once she knows the meaning and likes it.

Knowing what you know about DCUM and name threads in particular, why did you post?

Name her what you want and teach her not to care what others think - by not asking what others think.

Op is right people are being over the top nasty and clasdiist and dare I say racist in this thread. I think it's 1 or 2 trolls.

HI OP - I agree with you. I am surprised by the vitriolic reaction it has received, it definitely seems over the top. I guess I'm kinda neutral on the name, I do think it's cool but still a bit undecided on whether I really like it. And no, your child does not NEED a nickname for God's sake. None of my kids have names with nn's and they are just fine. We do have family nn's for them, but they are not suffering emotional distress because their friends don't call them by another name. Tempest is unique and not ugly and could be awesome. I think you should go for it!!
