Having recently moved from NYC to the FLX, I can't see all the doom and gloom people are talking about in this thread. The FLX is totally fleshing out to be an amazing area. Sure, the winters are a bit long but if you invest in making your home nice and still make a point of going out it's totally fine. Rochester has an up and coming food scene, an olmsted park, and very beautiful residential areas. So does Geneva. In fact, Geneva has a lot to offer overall for a place of its size and population.

Despite winters being a bit warmer downstate, NYC winters were abysmal. Riding trains w/ stressed our or sad looking people and walking through cold grey streets and cold train stations just wasn't fun. So I've much my ROC & FLX winters. The snow makes things prettier, and the warmth of my car is preferable to the depressing train rides. I also look forward to going into my nice house versus a stinky apartment building.

Irondequoit? I grew up in a neighboring burb but west irondequoit schools were always pretty well regarded (there’s also an east irondequoit). Some really lovely neighborhoods in there too, so e close to the lake.

I live close to Canandaigua and have close friends that live there. Follow the Canandaigua chronicles on Facebook to get a sense of the community. The lake house on Canandaigua is a great new addition to the community. The schools flopped big time during covid so be warned in case things get bad again. Online school was a joke and they only went two days a week all year.

I would do it in a heartbeat. DC is hyper competitive and I would give anything to get out of here and raise kids somewhere normal. My husband’s job keeps us here.

This sounds like a DP to me and I imagine they're moving to a rural area or small town in New England instead.

That would be quite the pointless post when someone asks you if you would move to the FInger Lakes region of NY.

It’s about moving from DC to a small, rural, middle of nowhere community with lots of snow. We are moving to MA which isn’t the Finger Lakes but basically the same idea as what Op is asking.
