Why would "no fixed address" automatically mean he has a mental illness? There are people who are homeless who don't have a mental illness, and there are people who have a mental illness and have a permanent address.
If he does have a mental illness, does that mean we should excuse his racist statements and theft? But only because he's white, though, right? If he was black, then they should throw the book at him, I'm sure.
Maybe all those black people who rioted and looted have mental illness, too. Should we excuse them, too? I'm sure some of those people have ptsd and maybe even autism.

Who cares whether or not he has a mental illness for purposes of getting him off the street? He clearly has been committing several crimes outside of the restaurant incident and I am sure he had no plans to stop. We can't have anyone doing this kind of stuff and letting them off.
If he is mentally ill then hopefully he will get treatment he needs, but slapping a mental illness label on him and saying NBD does no one any favors.

It's obvious from the footage the young man looks alarmed and confused.
Why would a restaurant owner risk being called out for $70? You are taking the video as truth of what happened, thinking the white guy has autism, but you won't take the word of an Asian business owner and her son?
It appears the exchange and the knocking the mom down happened outside - and it wasn't caught on security footage? No other business caught it on their security footage?
Why would I not take the video as truth? And why is there no supporting video from security cameras? Now that is really curious.

If he is clueless about these things then he's impaired enough for his family members to make sure he is not out on his own. He might do something like not follow a cop's direction, runaway thinking to the cop has cooties or something and get shot.
...or he should be in a supervised living situation. But yeah-if you are impaired enough to not be accountable for your actions (for whatever reason), you are impaired enough to have your activities restricted.
It’s not that he shouldn’t be held accountable. It’s that the social media machine needs to calm down and realize this isn’t some scenario where a white supremacist set out to steal from and target an Asian person.
I wish people would get this outraged at the daily thefts, assaults and racial slurs in my neighborhood but I guess it is only news if the perpetrator is a white man.
