Depends on your girlfriend OP.

I would be horrified if I found out a ring cost 20k, and would not want to wear it for fear of losing it or having it ripped off my hand.

But if your girlfriend is the type who wants a giant rock and a surprise proposal, she will probably be happy.

If you have money, it's up to you to decide what to spend it on. Don't worry what others think! We all have hobbies, personal tastes, etc. If you spending $20k on a vacation or a ring or a motorcycle or whatever you love is in your budget and makes you happy, sure, go for it.

I've always loved diamonds. Always, always. In college my now-husband gave me the cutest little promise ring with a 0.17 carat diamond from eBay. I loved that. When we got engaged, we used my Grandma's 1 carat diamond because we were poor. I loved that. By our 10th anniversary our finances had improved and I got a gorgeous 2 carat OEC for $11k. Obviously I loved that. Now, lucky me, lab diamond and moissanite technology has improved a ton, and I can have sparkly bobbles without the price tag. So I love those too! Anyone who wants to judge my hobby instead of cheering me on isn't the kind of person whose opinion I value, ya know? You do you.

Some women do not want a large stone.ay They want to be able to always wear their ring, not take it off. A large stone is not comfortable often, for everyday activities.

That would be the reason, I know of, why expensive may not be the right choice, since the expense is primarily the stone.

You've bought it already though Op -- don't overthink this.

Exactly. It's incredibly tacky, OP.

I know someone who spent $17k on a ring. They got divorced though.

+1. Why do so many people know what you spent on a ring?

Haters… Doesn’t matter what you buy, people always want to know. People ask how much I spend on my watches, I tell them they’re all knockoffs. 😁

Some people are telling me how dumb I am for spending that much on a ring. Is that extravagant or a reasonable price for a ring?

You shouldn’t give a flying F what others say about how much you spent. Do they pay your bills? Do you bust their chops about how they spend their money on extravagant trips? If you wanted to take a $100 bill and light it on fire, that’s your choice. Just like spending $20k on a ring. Once you get your head wrapped around not caring what others think, you’ll be better off in life. I say good for you and I hope she likes it.

I think that is a reasonable amount to spend on a ring. Don't lose it. Good luck.
