It’s true, and one of several reasons we decided to keep our first grader home/virtual. I totally support reasonable mitigation measures— masks, no sustained close interactions, etc. But it’s like they’ve worked hard to make sure any social benefits of returning to school are deleted. Hard not to wonder if it’s an intentional attempt to discourage people from choosing hybrid by making it unnecessarily miserable for the kids.

my thoughts exactly - making hybrid miserable so folks revert to distance. how are they getting away with this lunacy is my question.

My child is in baltimore county public schools and this is truly the impression I got. Apparently way too many kindergarteners opted for hybrid over distance learning, and the teacher was like “it might not be possible to bring all of the students back if they all elect to come back. So I just wanted to make sure all parents understood what the day would look like” and it was like, recess 6 feet apart and not on the playground or with any shared equipment, all class would continue to be done via Google meets on the chromebooks while at their desks, separated by plexiglass , with a teacher up front separated by plexiglass, and the staff is at no point allowed to come within 6 feet of a child even if they need help with their schoolwork.

I mean it worked, basically no one is sending their kindergartner in anymore, and a good portion finally just withdrew to homeschool for the year.

how are school districts getting away with this?

Get away with what? Some of these things are necessary to bring kids back into the classroom.

Seems like if you really wanted your kids back you’d do whatever was necessary to get them there. Or maybe you just want to complain about whatever happens no matter what....

Well they haven’t been necessary in private schools. Or other public school systems around the nation. Masked recess 6 feet apart and not in the playground and not using shared balls? And all classes to continue to be done on the computer even though they are in the classroom? The teacher can’t come near them to , like, teach them how to grasp the pencil and write correctly?

What makes you think that private schools don't have similar restrictions? The ones I know do.

Private schools are not having kids sit at their chrome books doing distance learning lessons in the classroom all day. Stop.

Yes, and?

Private schools work on a different scale and have fewer resources. Not sure why you think it’s relevant to compare.

Come on now. No you didn’t. APS has been going downhill for a long time.

WHAT!?! What are they trying to accomplish, further damage to our kids' and students' mental health? What is the logic? I think APS is punishing families that want to return.

Look be serious. Recess they need to be apart. It’s unfortunate but social distancing is required or every child on the playground is a contact once contact tracing commences

A close contact is within 6 feet indoors for more than 15 minutes (masks or not). Not outdoors for 15 minutes briefly passing right by each other on the playground

I’m finding that APS parents will find any reason to complain. A mom at our school had her nose out in joint because recess would only by class. Hence, No time to socialize with her kid’s friends in other classes. 🙄 just wait till after school when they won’t need a 10 foot bubble!

100%. It's the same with FCPS. The kids and families are definitely not excited.

Yes. It’s 10’ and masked in FCPS too (which I think is overkill), but it’s the same distancing rule pools had to follow last summer. While in the pool everyone was supposed to maintain at least 10’ because the VDH said while you are being active the viral spread is wider. In Phase 3 families had to maintain 10’ from other families.

At my school we have been told individuals can use jump ropes and balls. Students will be able to kick balls to each other. Equipment will be sprayed down with Virex afterward.

Just out of curiosity, why would 10 feet be miserable and 6 feet be fine?

I do think that people for whom the benefits of returning to the classroom are so small that 10 feet vs 6 feet is your decision factor, need to stay home. That's kind of the whole point of mitigation -- if it's possible for you to make a small sacrifice for gains, do so. If you need something, then get it as safely as you can. If you need your kid in school due to mental health (yours or the kid's) or economic factors, then take a slot, but if you're going to have a tantrum over a few feet, then you probably don't need it.

I never said 6 feet would be “fine.” I think outdoors, masked, & moving around kids should be able to just play how they want But this was just one factor. Kids being trapped at their desks all day was another big factor.

I mean let’s be honest… Most people think that 6 feet is really 4 feet, or closer. Setting a 10 foot limit will probably won’t keep kids from being right up in each others faces anyway. Seems seems like a silly thing to be so upset about. I’m just really happy they’re going to be able to go back in some capacity very soon. At least the younger kids.

Yes, social distancing is a thing during a pandemic.

No wonder our country has failed with the basics....

I think we all know masks and social distancing is different than “kids can’t use the playground” and “fully vaccinated and masked teachers cannot approach a crying child to help them”
