It seems like folks posting here are largely ignorant of the very strong legal protections for persons with mental illness and other incapacities under California law especially.

There is simply no way that a conservatorship would remain in place after such a length of time absent substantial clinical evidence, provided to the court by medical professionals, that she is incompetent to manage her own affairs. The court would not insist on keeping her father in place as conservator if there was any credible evidence he’s abused that position (conservators must provide very detailed reports to the court on a regular basis, at least annually if not more often), and the fact that the court has reaffirmed him as conservator repeatedly despite her efforts to have him removed rather suggests that her objections to him are viewed by the court as stemming not from any substantive failure on his part to carry out the duties properly, but is rather likely rooted in her incapacity.

For those who argue she can’t be incompetent and carry on her career as she is - please remember she is in the one industry in the world where a talented person can carry on working despite serious incapacity, because outrageous behavior is tolerated and most artists have an entourage of individuals buffering them in their interactions with the real world. She just has to show up, dance and sing.

Having a fair bit of experience in the field of law at issue, I have zero concern that she isn’t being protected by the system. The very fact that movies like this are out, and a whole fan movement, and her repeated opportunities to challenge aspects of the conservatorship in court, all points to her being free to speak out without fear.

I can guess at what her diagnoses are, but certainly they are not inconsequential by any means. I wish her healing and am deeply sorry for her that so many people who consider themselves her fans that care about her are actually feeding into her paranoia and fueling her disease with the whole ‘free Brittney’ thing.

Regarding JT, there were two topics- him essentially blaming her for the breakup (insinuating that she had cheated on him), and then talking about their sex life on a radio show. She had previously said that she wanted to wait for marriage, and people fixated on that. She was frequently quizzed in public venues as to whether she was still a virgin. Given the intense focus on her virginity, JT’s disclosure that he had “f@&ked” her was a big deal, really sleazy, and he used the drama for his own gain. This is all in the context of her being a huge target of misogyny in general. Even the First Lady of Maryland around that time found it perfectly appropriate to say (at a domestic violence function!) that she wished she could shoot Britney for being a bad influence on kids.

The whole situation is especially heartbreaking to me because BS just seemed to be a genuinely good, kind, caring person who was hounded until she broke down, and then even that breakdown was used by people for their own financial gain (paparazzi, the financial conservatorship).

Yes, this! To me, her insta is sad--clear and convincing evidence of ongoing mental illness. There's no way that her career- and money-oriented "team" is approving of or posting any of that.

So why would some third party make her instagram look like an immature child woman runs it? Perhaps to lend credence to their own ongoing control over her life?

I’m not pp, but I just took your advice. What I saw was someone sweet and probably immature for her age, who is trying to navigate an IG world as a much maligned and adored pop star whose glory days are probably behind her. Not someone who should be muzzled and controlled like a rabid raccoon. Maybe she does need help, but her IG proves nothing.

So I don't know if we learned anything new from this documentary. Also, what is the intention behind this documentary? Who's interests is it representing? Definitely not Britney's as it was the media harassment and bullying that was one of the leading causes of her initial mental breakdown. I'd be curious to know who pitched it to the NYT and what their intentions were. If they are painting her father as the bad guy and was to transfer her conservatorship to someone else, WHO?

We also do not know what is allegedly wrong with her mental health. To my knowledge we have never been made aware of the extent or the severity of her alleged mental illness. Without these details its really challenging to legitimately question her current conservatorship status.

I just watched last night. There is no reason that her father should be the conservator. He was not even significantly in her life, he is making hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars, and then he petitioned for more money. Really? Why?

It’s not right. She doesn’t want him to be the conservator anymore. Why should he be? The whole thing made me sick.

She was mistreated from a young age, grew up way too fast, overly sexualized… The baby one more time video at 16 years old. I feel sorry for her and it is no wonder that she has mental issues. I really hope she gets the treatment she needs.

Agreed. I wasn’t ever really invested in what was going on with her but looking back I feel like no one was defending her.

But I do think now, she deserves some kind of independence. Perhaps just putting the majority of her money in a trust and preventing her current boyfriend from raiding it would be acceptable to let her be free of her dad.
