Uh, things are expensive here? Seriously what kind of question is this? Things like housing and daycare cost more in dc and surround areas, further out they cost less.

It’s not high cost like the Bay Area is. That said housing is still much more expensive here than elsewhere, as are some other things like private schooling.

What kind of consulting? You mean he is his own IT consulting business not that he works for another company?

DH made the switch from IT Director at a big company to consulting, he makes 400-500k. He has Masters in Comp Sci and is very good at what he does. and works 50 hrs/week. The important thing is that he is a hustler, he can go get contracts and is never stressed about managing his own business. Equally important is the fact that I work for local government and make 140k so he has some cushion.

Yeah, but she is really worried about jumping into a job that pays so much less, working the same or more, and still not liking it. That's basically throwing away $100k for literally nothing. If I get a higher paying job, I maybe work more, but I have a much higher tolerance for work annoyances and crappy bosses, and we are getting paid for that inconvenience. Eventually she would quit, and save me from the drudgery of racing to pickup or worrying as much about home stuff -- she would take on all of that and I would be just left working.
