New poster here. I agree with nearly everyone here. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Open the schools, teachers can prepare any afternoon after classes end - or before 9am when classes start. You're only teaching like 4-5 hours a day.

Honest question:
If teachers have 3 classes with 30 students each and have one homework _project and one quiz/test per week, how long does grading take?

3 classes is not a full load. A full load is 5 classes. Many of us teach two preps (different levels of a course or 2 entirely different courses). I haven’t assigned a single quiz or worksheet this year. It is all essays and projects.

Really?? Holding people’s feet to the fire to actually do their job is called “accountability” not “blaming”. Asking for the option to send our kids to school is a bare minimum at this point. (And btw, no we don’t share the same job. My job is to raise a good, strong, independent person with a moral center and strong set of values. Your job is to teach them academically. Yes it is a partnership, yes it takes a village, and yes the lines are blurred. But don’t conflate the two. Being physically present is as much a part of your job as it is mine. Stop making excuses already.)

Fine, we’ll all just skip the 504 meetings and other events planned for our non-teaching duty hours.

LOL

True point. Considering every other business, pretty much all over the world, has had to make adjustments to reopen this past year. Somehow they have managed. Even with considerable funding and monetary support, MCPS simply can’t make it happen.

Too bad, so sad for the kids, I guess.

That all of you think you can just look at and judge and think about how much time it takes to do their jobs? The lack of respect and value for teachers is disgraceful. If you think it is such a cushy, easy job than why didn't you become a teacher? If you want your child to learn, it isn't about returning to school in person- it is about respect. If you think this away about their teachers, what attitude do you think they have towards their teachers. I am sure it is challenging to learn when you feel that you already know everything. If you think it is so easy to unpack and set up a classroom, then you should volunteer to go and help your child's teacher. This is really ugly, and this is the problem, not where we are learning, but the community speaking and writing this ugly rehetoric.

Part of the frustration is that it is a "profession" where many of the "professionals" seem unwilling to go beyond the bare minimum required of them, even during a pandemic where kids have lost so much class time and learning. Although it is not the teacher's fault this learning loss has occurred, it would be nice if teachers showed some willingness to do things like get classrooms ready without claiming to need many days away from teaching to do it.

Most other professionals would simply see it as part of their job and get it done.

Unfortunately a few voices don’t equal all. I, for one, would love to see a post that didn’t lump every poor action, every dumb post off Twitter or Facebook to ALL teachers. Part of the frustration is the lack of respect is extended to all in a blanket statement. This is the first time I’m reading about this request for days and yet DCUM claims all teachers want this. It’s the same crap and different day.

Please don't break your neck falling off your high horse. No one is saying every teacher is like that. We've had some great teachers who actually have gotten reprimanded for going above and beyond what was allowed.

But, let's not pretend its an isolated few. If it were, you wouldn't have the BOE asking the state to forgo four days of education to provide time for classroom prep. Nor would you have teachers' unions fighting efforts to come back. (While I haven't seen an official union statement regarding the request for time away from classes for preparation, I would have to assume they support it and may very well have had a hand in the request being made in the first place.)

Again, you are using “you” as if I’m a teacher and are keenly aware that you are blaming you preconceived notions in strangers in the internet. Good luck with that.

Fine, you are not a teacher. So what? That doesn't change any of the substantive points I raised that you (regardless of your profession) chose not to address.

I see that you have no substantive points. As you may know a few teachers calling BOE (as you suggest) is not changing anything. Teachers unions don’t go around asking members for their permission to push an agenda. Try again.

Well done there, despite yourself, you actually did respond to my substantive points. I don't agree with your responses because, among other reasons, unions would not take actions that were against the interest of the majority of their members, but at least we are getting somewhere beyond you simply fuming with righteous indignation.

You’ve not added anything substantial, just petty insults. You can’t see past the forest for the trees and you’re not open to hearing anything but your own poignant points so, why respond? Good luck.

Exactly.

They should have been preparing to go back from Day 1.

Did we think online learning would last forever?? It was always a given that the kids would be back in school some day.

Why isn’t MCPS ready now? Ridiculous incompetency.

This!

Just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean teachers aren’t going beyond the bare minimum. It’s when it is expected for every little thing. In addition to working, I am taking 2 graduate classes and taking care of my own children. I spend plenty of my personal time working but I’m only willing to sacrifice up to a point.
