As a Stanford alum and former west coast resident, i can tell you applying there is brutal. Half their admits are recruited athletes. Many others come from families of .001% wealth, big time connections or fame. This leads to a strong arrogance and sense of entitlement. Sprinkle in the scholarship students and URMs (several of whom are of dubious claim) to make Stanford feel good about itself, and that leaves very little space for the amazing applicants you read about here. It's great to apply if it's your dream, but just be realistic about the chances. When you hear that someone from this area got in "on their own merits", i will bet that there is a hidden hook almost every single time. And I am extremely supportive of the school having a diverse student body, but what passes for adding diversity has been questionable lately.
The perception of Stanford out here is that it's a funky, liberal school with great academics. I think people conflate the image of Berkeley and Stanford. The latter is much more mainstream and intense. And with the student mix described above, it's not as utopian as people think.
interesting how you describe the URM as being of dubious claim but don't describe the .001% wealth kids (presumably mostly white) as also as being of dubious claim when that seems equally likely
I think PP was more referring to the students who take an ancestry test and discover they're 8% Native Alaskan and then write their essay on their life as a Native Alaskan in a majority white school. They had to go to Stanford so badly that they need to do something intensely disingenuous to get there and they will have the same attitude as they go through their time there. Not a general commentary on the wonderful students of color who worked just as hard as anyone else to get there (that's my interpretation of PP).

I know 2 local Stanford admits - one is a recruited athlete that is also super smart and the other is at a local public. The public school kid is amazing in everything (national merit scholar, crazy smart, charming, athletic, passionate about a cause). I thought the public school kid was unhooked, but someone mentioned the parent attended Stanford. It is very, very hard to get in early without a hook. So excited for both of these kids!

Has dedicated over 700 hours of community service to include youth advisory board of the largest youth volunteer organization in our area. Club sports at the highest level and all of the other obligatory clubs...National, Spanish, Science and Math Honor Society as well as Special Olympics Committee. Reality is these schools are a crapshoot, can't get mad if you don't make it.

Thanks for all the words of encouragement...no didn't expect a thing from Stanford, he clearly understood he was swinging for the fences, middle class white young man, no hook, full pay and in with many many other great young kids just like him. He wanted to give it a shot, glad he did, now he'll have no regrets moving forward.
OP, my older son was a stellar student like your son, who got rejected from every Ivy/top 20 school he applied to. He wound up at a top school for his his specialty, did research throughout, had a fantastic summer research internship at one of the schools that rejected him, and wound up with a free ride with a stipend to the top graduate school in his field - another one of the schools who rejected him for undergrad. Your son should be proud of his accomplishments and keep at it. There are good things ahead for him.

Princeton bagged SCEA this year, so it may be more competitive as a result at some of the others, ie Stanford, Harvard and Yale, in the early round, but shake out more evenly over the rest of the year. I have a child who graduated last year. So many kids were disappointed in the early round but ultimately went to great schools, some even got into more competitive ones than the ED school that deferred them!

I don’t know if there are thousands and thousands with those amazing stats —4.0 uw at magnet, 700 hours of service, 8 varsity letters, etc. but still puts everything in better perspective what a crap shot it is at the elite schools without hook.

Wow, I can't believe he did not get in! What an amazing profile. This gives me little hope for my child who is in 10th grade and will likely not have such achievements. Anyway, good luck to your son and please keep us posted on where he does eventually go.
