No one with real money would care about such a thing. Equating carats to a spouse being a "loser" sounds very nouveau riche. To answer OPs question. 2ct isn't necessarily big. It depends on the shape, size of the hand, and also the cut and clarity. All of these things can impact how small or large the stone "shows up".

Round solitaires will always look bigger compared to other shapes. A round 2ct is pretty sizable imo. Not too big but you're not going to miss it. A 3ct round is getting to "overkill"/ looks "silly" territory. A 1ct to 1.5ct round diamond is perfect for everyday wear. With a great cut and clear stone and someone with small hands you could probably do .8ct even. It all depends.

Outside of appearance, diamonds are dumb and I say this as an owner of quite of a few. It is not an "investment". You get it because it's pretty. Don't spend more than makes sense as you qould for anything else that is decorative and not particularly functional.

Plus, a well-cut.8-.9 is not going to look much different visually than 1. And you save money this way, because people are hung up on the 1.0 distinction. If you want 2 carats, go for 1.75 and up and no one will know the difference.

All I can say is that of the couples I know that made a really big deal about the ring- as in it HAD to be at least a certain size, certain style, and the woman has always had pretty much the exact ring in her mind since she was an adult— they are now divorced. I’m not totally sure why that is, the women were very cool and people. But they were chased by guys who liked to dazzle and impress and keep up appearances. But didn’t have the character required for a good marriage.

Have you thought about making it into a necklace? 5 ct is still fcking huge for a pendant, but talk about a showstopper.

Some of us love big sparkly diamonds and gems. I love them whether I bought them or they were a gift. I have some and wear them. I don’t wear them for others, I wear them for me. I love the optical effect of a diamond and the saturated color of a colored gemstone.

Get one of those Italo white sapphire rings to try it out. I got a 2.5 carat travel ring for about $120 and and it is a little large. My real ring is 1.52 (which I haven't worn much since the pandemic) and it's the right size for me.
