I don't think it is sheer numbers per se. Davidson has a much higher percentage of students on campus. Easier to monitor. UVA has evidence of community spread already, which is troubling. They really need the numbers for the next few days to go down.
Seriously? I'd say 2,000 students is easier to control than 16,000 students. Then add in that Davidson N.C. is a really small town, where Charlottesville is much larger.
Well, UVA has more of everything compared to Davidson, including its own health system it can use in support. It isn't as if UVA is trying to mange 16,000 students with the same staffing as Davidson. Davidson has 95% of students living on campus. UVA has 38%. I just think the lack of oversight on the off campus students is going to be the deciding factor.

This. I dropped my first year off today. The number of kids not wearing masks is concerning.
We were there yesterday (Sunday, Sept. 6). I'd say about 40% were not wearing masks, were in pretty close proximity to one another, and didn't seem to be worried about it too much.
We were there too but saw very high mask compliance on-grounds. When students are outside eating which many have to do now, they can't wear masks.
Where we saw your 40% number was in the greater Charlottesville community and across all ages. They can't pin community spread entirely on students and would do well to lead by example.
I'm not sure how useful anonymous anecdotal reports are, but I also dropped my kid off and also saw high adherence to mask wearing.

More like 3-4 weeks, because they are starting with testing all students. More like Radford than JMU.

Why is UvA not enforcing masking? If kids are starting out wandering around with no masks, there is no hope they avoid off campus parties, and they are about two weeks behind JMU.

We also live in Charlottesville but not adjacent to UVa and students have been out and about on The Corner, on Rugby Rd, etc. mask usage is no where near as good as it should be for all of the messaging UVa has sent out to students.
